The majority of work in mortality modeling involves factor-based approaches, with little use of information on the determinants and interpretable risk factors of mortality. At the same time, in the demographic community, there has been a lack of research attention towards the study of mortality from a spatial perspective. This work is a step towards addressing this, by providing an investigation of the presence of spatial variability in the determinants of mortality rates. Specifically, by using the age-adjusted mortality rates of the counties of the contiguous United States, this research applies a multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) approach to examine the spatial variations in the relationships between mortality rates and a diverse group of associated determinants. The results of this study demonstrate that the MGWR approach produces an interpretable and accurate account of the global, regional and local effects acting on the mortality rates of the United States. Thus, this work lays the groundwork for the consideration of spatial varying effects on mortality rates which operate at different spatial scales.

The initial plans for this book sprang from a late-afternoon conversation in a hotel bar. All three authors were attending the 1996 meeting of the Population As- ciation of America in New Orleans. While nursing drinks and expounding on a variety of topics, we began talking about our current research projects. It so happened that all three of us had been entertaining the notion of writing a book on state and local population projections. Recognizing the enormity of the project for a single author, we quickly decided to collaborate. Had we not decided to work together, it is unlikely that this book ever would have been written. The last comprehensive treatment of state and local population projections was Don Pittenger’s excellent work Projecting State and Local Populations (1976). Many changes affecting the production of population projections have occurred since that time. Technological changes have led to vast increases in computing power, new data sources, the development of GIS, and the creation of the Internet. The procedures for applying a number of projection methods have changed considerably, and several completely new methods have been developed.

Using a number of modern predictive modeling methods, we seek to understand the factors that drive mortality in the contiguous United States. The mortality data we use is indexed by county and year as well as age grouped into 18 different bins. We propose a model that adds two important contributions to existing mortality studies. First, instead of building mortality models separately by age or treating age as a fixed covariate, we treat age as a random effect. This is an improvement over previous models because it allows the model in one age group to borrow strength and information from other age groups that are nearby. The result is a multivariate spatiotemporal model and is estimated using Integrated Nested Laplace Approximations (INLA). Second, we utilize Gaussian Processes to create nonlinear covariate effects for predictors such as unemployment rate, race, and income. This allows for a more flexible relationship to be modeled between mortality and these important predictors. Understanding that the United States is expansive and diverse, we also allow for many of these affects to vary by location. The amount of flexibility of our model in how predictors relate to mortality has not been used in previous mortality studies and will result in a more accurate model and a more complete understanding of the factors that drive mortality. Both the multivariate nature of the model as well as the non-linear predictors that have an interaction with space will advance the study of mortality beyond what has been done previously and will allow us to better examine the often complicated relationships between the predictors and mortality in different regions.
