Excerpt from American Eloquence, Vol. 1: A Collection of Speeches and Addresses; By the Most Eminent Orators of America The design Of the present work is to furnish a convenient and popular Library Edition of the most celebrated Speeches and Addresses, forensic-and parliamentary, of the principal Orators and Statesmen of America. It contains many which have never before been included in any collection; and heretofore inaccessible to the student and general reader. As far as attainable, specimens Of the eloquence Of the Continental Congress have been given, which fully illustrate the principles and portray the sufferings Of the Revolutionary Period. Many entire speeches from the debates in Congress, since the year 1789, under the present organization of the Government, will also be found in this work. Selections from the earnest and able discussions in the State Conventions Of the principles involved in the adoption Of the Federal Constitution, also form a considerable portion of the work; and thus render it valuable-as a means, Of acquiring an understanding. Of that important instrument. The biographical sketches, preceding the selections from the works of each orator, are intended to present a brief outline Of their lives and public services, the limited space allowed for that portion of the work precluding more extended notices. The analytical index attached to the work may render it generally useful as a book Of reference. The want Of a work Of this kind is too obvious to make any apology necessary for its publication at the present time. Should its success warrant such a course, another series, embracing the more recent and living orators. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from American Oratory: Or Selections From the Speeches of Eminent Americans No apology can be required for presenting to the American public a volume of Speeches selected from the best efforts of their own statesmen. Public discussion is elsewhere the province of a few; in our country, it is the duty of almost all. It is not only desirable, therefore, but absolutely necessary, that all should have at hand those models, which the peculiar character of our institutions, the tone of our national thought, and the exigencies of our history, have combined to produce. Foreign orators may serve as examples of style, but the inhabitants of a republic must seek at home for the intellectual results of the government they have chosen, and for the illustration of those principles by which it is to be sustained. If they cannot always find the same refinement of language, or the same elaborateness of thought, which in older countries is the result of hereditary wealth and more scholastic education, they will discover at least a vigorous and masculine diction, patriotic sentiments, and unflinching independence, the appropriate attendants upon themes for the most part grave, and frequently severe. The editor does not affect to have used any extraordinary research in the compilation now presented to the reader. The character of the subjects discussed has had great influence with him in the selections he has made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Orators of the American Revolution Our leading speakers, in Colonial and Revolutionary times, were distinguished not more for their general ability, than for the wonderful originality of talent with which each in particular was characterized. To indicate this individuality of oratorical excellence, and the results which by a mighty unity in diversity were produced, is the Object of the present publication. Each one of the following portraitures briefly comprehends the earthly career of its subject but, in accordance with the above avowal, the reader may expect to meet with historical details, only so far 5s they are requisite to explain the pre liminary training and elucidate the peculiar eloquence of the master under consideration. The dates and circumstances employed for this purpose the author has gathered from all the resources within his reach.
