This surveillance report presents trends in liver cirrhosis mortality in the United States. Data on the underlying cause of death were compiled from public use data tapes published annually by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). Population data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau are used as denominators to calculate mortality rates. Overall cirrhosis mortality in the United States increased steadily following the end of Prohibition in 1933 until 1973, when the age-adjusted death rate peaked at 18.1 deaths per 100,000 population. Cirrhosis mortality then began an almost steady decline that has continued throughout the last four decades. The following are highlights of liver cirrhosis mortality trends from the early 1970s through 2007, the most recent year for which data are available.
