With a full mess of milk and bread." Mary Lamb. "No," said Peggy to herself, with a little sigh, "the naughty clouds has covered it up to-day. I can't see it." "Miss Peggy," came nurse's voice from the other side of the room, "your breakfast's waiting. Come to the table, my dear, and stand quiet while Master Thor says the grace."

Mary Louisa Molesworth (1839-1921) was a Scottish writer. Her first novels, Lover and Husband (1869) to Cicely (1874), appeared under the pseudonym of "Ennis Graham. " She typified late Victorian writing for girls. Aimed at girls too old for fairies and princesses but too young for Austen and the Brontes, books by Molesworth had their share of amusement, but they also had a good deal of moral instruction. The girls reading Molesworth would grow up to be mothers; thus, the books emphasized Victorian notions of duty and self-sacrifice. She is best known as a writer of books for the young, such as Tell Me a Story (1875), Carrots (1876), The Cuckoo Clock (1877), The Tapestry Room: A Child's Romance (1879), and A Christmas Child (1880). She has been called "the Jane Austen of the nursery, " while The Carved Lions (1895) is probably her masterpiece. Her other works include Rosy (1882), Us: An Old Fashioned Story (1885), and The Rectory Children (1889).

Little Miss Peggy. Only a Nursery Story. By Mrs. Molesworth. -- There is a particular charm about Mrs. Molesworth's story for children. Her little heroes and heroines are always natural, and their minds and ways, their faults and virtues, their inward struggles and aspirations are all presented to us as only the most heart-felt and loving sympathy could present them. In the story before us, the author's fancy is as bright and inventive as usual, and "Little Miss Peggy's" adventures will be followed with delight from first to last. Peggy is a solitary little girl in family of brothers who though they tease, are all very fond of her. She is a charmingly quaint old fashioned body, and the tender regard for " the boys," as she calls them, is pathetic and beautiful. Our illustration shows "Little Miss Peggy" in trouble, or should we say, in the umbrella. Altogether a more delightful child's story we have seldom read, and, admirably illustrated as it is by Mr. Walter Crane, it should certainly rank among the best children's books of the season.--The Bookseller, A Newspaper of British and Foreign Literature
