Excerpt from Little Lessons in Plant Life for Little Children W. F. Fox and to Professor Leroy S. Edwards, of the Richmond Public Schools, not only for encouragement and help, but also for many valu able suggestions. Teachers will see that I have endeavored to correlate with plant study lessons in language, drawing, writing and spelling. I have sought to do this in a way that would not burden the young mind. In Lesson VI. I have pointed out a method of teaching spelling which is intended to be only suggestive. Each teacher will succeed best with her own method. First Studies of Plant Life is written with a truly heart-warming purpose. Written by a distinguished academic but pitched at a level which is designed to allow a teacher to captivate a child in the earliest years of school. Atkinson takes the view that reasoning and 'why?' questions are suitable and appropriate for even the tiniest children and should not be held in reserve for a later date. It centres on an understanding of the 'life history' of a plant rather than tedious and traditional encouragements to rote learn and exclude context. George Francis Atkinson tells us in a startling modern way that a child does not best learn about a flower by uprooting it, dissecting and classifying it. Rather they should plant a seed, find out how it germinates, watch it grow, learn about its food, see how it breathes, reproduces and ultimately dies back. For as the author states 'When the child has once become acquainted with the conditions and necessities of plant life, how different will the world seem to him.' The book begins and progresses in an intuitive way. It begins with the particular characteristics of seeds and their peculiarities and progresses all the way on to the root systems, the changing colours of the leaves on trees and the bright momentary flowers and bids by plants for pollination and reproduction. Small engaging experiments suitable for independent learners, homeschooling or teachers in a classroom are outlined and encouraged, further tying the book to an inclusive ethos of hands on learning. A child could hardly fail to fall in love with botany when taught from this book but an adult has scarcely more opportunity to avoid being enthralled. Download Nature Stories for Young Readers Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from Nature Stories for Young Readers: Animal Life The subjects of this series of lessons are mainly such insects or other animals as the children may observe for themselves. The lessons aim to give illustrations of some of the varied means of self-protection employed by animals; their methods of home-building and of caring for their young; the transformations they undergo; the adaptability to their surroundings as shown by their coverings and the tools with which the various animals are provided. The purpose in attempting to bring these thoughts to the youngest readers is manifold. It is hoped that such readers may become interested, while children, in the abundant life about them, and that when this interest is gratified by learning of the wonderful lives and habits of these little people, a respect for all life may be inculcated. Download Buds, Stems and Roots (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from Buds, Stems and Roots This little book does not claim to be exhaustive, but aims at bringing the children into an attitude of appreciation of plant life, its laws of growth and the wonders of its development. A few seeds or plants brought into the school-room, and allowed to develop there, the children watching each stage of progress, will teach more than hundreds of wonderful buds and stems ruthlessly dissected by little hands already too eager to destroy. That sort of botany which consists merely of pulling a wonder ful blossom to pieces, and wasting its loveliness, that the child may count its petals and see the number written down on a blackboard, is of questionable value.
