Modern literature has been treated using a variety of different methods and no one would question the necessity of methodic approach. With regard to medieval literature, the subject of Lesarten, this seems to be less obvious. The main thesis of Lesarten is, however, that methodological explicity plays an even bigger role in the study of medieval texts because here we are investigating a distant culture whose native readers we cannot interview.
