In many developing and post-industrialized nations, there are powerful demographic and social changes that are endangering the natural ways that old and young have traditionally interacted. The current growth in the young and elderly segments of the population, of most countries, is leading to new challenges in terms of providing health care, education, financial support, and social support systems for the young as well as the elderly. An important set of strategies for addressing these trends and the quality of life concerns they generate is the facilitation of intergenerational programs. The National Council on the Aging has defined "intergenerational programming" as "activities or programs that increase cooperation, interaction or exchange between any two generations." In Linking Lifetimes, the contributors explore the range of intergenerational programs and policies found across the globe, and examine their role in ensuring the transmission of cultural values from generation to generation. By illustrating the rich diversity of intergenerational program models, the contributors discover how the common goal of promoting intergenerational interaction and understanding unfolds into differential trends, social issues, and human service systems.

This book examines the challenges for the life insurance sector in Europe arising from new technologies, socio-cultural and demographic trends, and the financial crisis. It presents theoretical and applied research in all areas related to life insurance products and markets, and explores future determinants of the insurance industry’s development by highlighting novel solutions in insurance supervision and trends in consumer protection. Drawing on their academic and practical expertise, the contributors identify problems relating to risk analysis and evaluation, demographic challenges, consumer protection, product distribution, mortality risk modeling, applications of life insurance in contemporary pension systems, financial stability and solvency of life insurers. They also examine the impact of population aging on life insurance markets and the role of digitalization. Lastly, based on an analysis of early experiences with the implementation of the Solvency II system, the book provides policy recommendations for the development of life insurance in Europe.

In classical life insurance mathematics the obligations of the insurance company towards the policy holders were calculated on artificial conservative assumptions on mortality and interest rates. However, this approach is being superseded by developments in international accounting and solvency standards coupled with other advances enabling a market-based valuation of risk, i.e., its price if traded in a free market. The book describes these approaches, and is the first to explain them in conjunction with more traditional methods. The various chapters address specific aspects of market-based valuation. The exposition integrates methods and results from financial and insurance mathematics, and is based on the entries in a life insurance company's market accounting scheme. The book will be of great interest and use to students and practitioners who need an introduction to this area, and who seek a practical yet sound guide to life insurance accounting and product development.
