Excerpt from The Basin and Greybull Oil and Gas Fields, Bighorn County, Wyoming The first of these structures to be successfully tested by deep boring is known as the Peay Hill anticline and is situated a short distance southeast of Greybull, Wyoming, at the junction of the Bighorn and Greybull Rivers. In July, 1907, the Peay Hill Oil Development Co. Obtained a high pressure gas well on the east bank of the Bighorn River, in Sec. 21, T. 52 N., R. 93 W., which, from its ability to maintain a strong, steady flow of gas for months without visible signs of diminution was the first good proof of the existence of appreciable quantities of gas, and possibly also oil, in these anticlinals. Excerpt from The Salt Creek Oil Field: Natrona County, Wyo During the last two years the region lying north of Casper, Wyoming, near the northern border of Natrona County, has shown promise of becoming an important factor in the production of high grade oils of paraffin base. The developed field lies in townships 39 and 40 north, ranges 78 and 79 west of the sixth principal meridian, in the drainage basin of Salt Creek, the wells obtaining their oil from a sandstone in the upper portion of the Benton formation, which underlies the region. The extremely high grade of the oil, which ranges from 37 to 43 Beaume, and the great productiveness of the wells, which yield from 0 to 1200 barrels of oil per day, are among the things which are attracting wide-spread attention to the region. Excerpt from A Preliminary Report on the Utilization of Petroleum and Natural Gas in Wyoming The presence of oil and natural gas in Wyoming has been known for a long time, and many more or less sporadic attempts have been made to develop these resources commercially, but owing to a num ber of factors, such as inadequate transportation facilities, lack of capital, and poorly advised prospecting, it has been only within recent years that Wyoming has taken other than a minor part in oil production. With the successful development of the Salt Creek field north of Casper, however, prospecting received a new and vigorous impetus, and at the present time many rigs are being Operated at widely scattered localities in the endeavor to develop other equally remunerative territory. Gas has been discovered in the State in considerable quantity, notably in the Bighorn Basin, but owing to marketing limitations this resource has thus far not been utilized fully.
