From Abstract: Eelgrasses serve as important nursery habitats in the Pacific Northwest for diverse marine life and are widely recognized as indicators of coastal ecological health. Seasonal differences in respiration and Photosynthesis-Irradiance (P-I) relationships of a population of marine eelgrass Zostera marina in Rosario Bay, WA were investigated in order to characterize its growth potential in different seasons. The local light availability in situ for each season was also estimated by combining direct light measurements under different conditions with hourly weather and tide measurements. Measurement of the P-I relationship of blade sections and extrapolation to whole plants demonstrated that sufficient light is present even in the lowest-light season (winter) so that clean eelgrass is able to at least support its metabolism by photosynthesis and experience net growth. However, epiphytic algae living on the blades of Z. marina likely reduces its access to light, especially in summer, and could potentially lead to light limiting conditions.

From Abstract: Eelgrasses and other seagrasses are important habitats along the Pacific Northwest coast for a variety of marine life. They are also widely known to be indicators of coastal ecological health. There are many parameters that affect eelgrass growth, and several of those parameters were investigated in order to determine whether or not those factors were associated with the limits to Z. marina growth in Rosario Bay, Washington ...

We summarize eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) restoration and mitigation project results and recommendations of transplant practitioners in the Pacific Northwest since 1990. Our purpose is to provide current information for programs considering eelgrass restoration by providing a synthesis of what practitioners and researchers have learned through experimentation and monitoring of discrete projects throughout western Washington and British Columbia. Reports, papers, personal communications, and a workshop were used to gather data on these projects. Our general null hypothesis is that eelgrass can be restored to match natural eelgrass meadows in terms of structure and function. We conclude that, under favorable site conditions, and if the reason for the initial loss of eelgrass is understood and corrected, that eelgrass can be restored. However, eelgrass restoration science is hampered by knowledge gaps, reducing restoration success. For example, mechanisms for recent eelgrass loss in the region are not obvious, which suggests that the scientific understanding of eelgrass biology and ecosystem conditions is inadequate to support environmental management actions in our region. To improve restoration project success in the Pacific Northwest requires further research knowledge gaps, closely evaluating the performance of restoration projects, and disseminating information for use by future generations. Workshop participants identified an immediate need to construct a clearinghouse of eelgrass restoration and monitoring results that provides summaries and data from eelgrass enhancement efforts. Furthermore, we found that it was difficult to summarize the relative performance of the more than 30 projects reviewed because of variations in goals, project size, planting methods employed, performance criteria, duration of monitoring, intensity of monitoring, and data interpretation. Hence, we recommend that standard monitoring protocols be developed and results from .these methods be reported through the clearinghouse and periodic meetings.

The goal of the report project is to define the habitat requirements of seagrasses in the European coasts, the present threats to the sustainability of the ecosystem they form, and their resilience to disturbance in order to strengthen our forecast capacity and formulate cost-effective monitoring plans and management strategies.

This thorough and informative volume presents a set of detailed, globally applicable techniques for seagrass research. The book provides methods for all aspects of seagrass science from basic plant collection to statistical approaches and investigations of plant-animal interaction. The emphasis is on methods that are applicable in both developing and developed countries. The importance of seagrasses in coastal and near shore environments, and ultimately their contribution to the productivity of the world's oceans, has become increasingly recognised over the last 40 years.Seagrasses provide food for sea turtles, nearly 100 fish species, waterfowl and for the marine mammals the manatee and dugong. Seagrasses also support complex food webs by virtue of their physical structure and primary production and are well known for their role as breeding grounds and nurseries for important crustacean, finfish and shell fish populations. Seagrasses are the basis of an important detrital food chain. The plants filter nutrients and contaminants from the water, stabilise sediments and act as dampeners to wave action. Seagrasses rank with coral reefs and mangroves as some of the world's most productive coastal habitat and strong linkages among these habitats make the loss of seagrasses a contributing factor in the degradation of the world's oceans. Contributors from around the world provide up-to-date methods for comparable collection of ecological information from both temperate and tropical seagrass ecosystems.
