Excerpt from The Life of William Farel: The Swiss Reformer William Farel was born at Gap, in the province of Dauphiny, in the year 1489. He belonged to a family of rank, and possessed of good fortune. He had three brothers, Daniel, Gautier, and Claudius, and at least one sister. Of his very earliest years nothing is known. Dauphiny had recently been added to the crown of France, and shared in the paternal care of Louis XII., whose reign, notwithstanding its wars, was held in remembrance by his subjects as a golden age. It was the patriotic wish of this prince that his nobility should cultivate an acquaintance with literature and science, instead of devoting their chief attention to field sports and other pastimes. With these enlarged views, the bent of young Farel's mind perfectly coincided. It was not, however, without much difficulty that he prevailed on his parents to gratify his thirst for knowledge. But his distinguished attainments appear to have led them, in the issue, fully to approve of his choice, since they bestowed on the younger branches of the family the same advantages of education. Jason Zuidema has written a thrilling account of William Farel's life and challenges the classic thinking that a worn-out Farel handed over to Calvin in Geneva. Although Farel was some twenty years older than Calvin he was an intellectual giant and continued to be a major influence in the Reformation process. Farel was born in 1489 and in the 1520's was one of the first French speakers to echo Luther's critique of the Roman Catholic church, having arrived at his own conclusions by simply reading Scripture. He saw this as a work of God's grace and soon developed a passion to spread the Gospel to other French-speaking lands. By 1528 he has produced the first draft of a French Reformed liturgy and other works soon followed. By 1532 Farel was in Geneva, where he would meet Calvin in 1536 and by God's grace be the main agent in Calvin's call to the city. Calvin described it in his Preface to his commentary on the Psalms: ... Farel detained me at Geneva, not so much by counsel and exhortation, as by a dreadful imprecation, which I felt to be as if God had from heaven laid his mighty hand upon me to arrest me.

William Farel (1489-1565) was a French evangelist, and a founder of the Reformed Church in the cantons of NeuchGtel, Berne and Geneva, and the Canton of Vaud Switzerland. He is most often remembered for having persuaded John Calvin to remain in Geneva in 1536, and for persuading him to return there in 1541, after their expulsion in 1538. Together with Calvin, Farel worked to train missionary preachers who spread the Protestant cause to other countries, and especially to France. Farel was a fiery preacher and an energetic critic of the Roman Catholic Church. In the earliest years of the Reformation in France, he was a pupil of the pro-reform Catholic priest, Jacques Lefevre d'Etaples. While working with Lefevre in Meaux, he came under the influence of Lutheran ideas and became an avid promoter of them. He was forced to flee to Switzerland because of controversy that was aroused by his writings against the use of images in Christian worship.
