Excerpt from Life of Robert Burns Most people are aware that the Life of Burns has already been dealt with by not a few eminent writers. It was, therefore, with reluctance and misgivings that I - alto gether without experience of this kind of work - under took to pen a sketch of the Poet's career, with a View to the completion of the Third Volume of The Book of Robert Burns, which was projected and so far carried through by the late Dr. Charles Rogers, under the auspices of the Grampian Club. When the third volume of the above-named work appeared, my narrative met with many unexpectedly favour able press notices, in some of which the opinion was expressed that this Life of Burns should be recast for publication in separate form, and at a cost easily acces sible to those of the general public who might care to have it. The Biography is now issued in accordance with this opinion. It is nowadays next to impossible to lay any large or just claim to originality in dealing with the Life of Burns. This volume only claims to be a faithful and sympathetic effort to put together a record of facts, as full as moderate space would hold, and in language as simple and concise as the writer could employ. A biographer's first and constant aim should be to keep himself in the background. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Robert Burns But otherwise the story of Burns's life has been told with such minuteness of detail, that the internal evidence of his poetry would seem only to be called in to verify or correct the verdict of tradition and the garbled gossip of those wise after the fact of his fame. It is so easy after a man has compelled the attention of the world to fill up the empty years of his life when he was all unknown to fame, with illustrative anecdotes and almost forgotten incidents, revealed and coloured by the light of after events! This is a penalty of genius, and it is sometimes called fame, as if fame were a gift given of the world out of a boundless and unintelligent curiosity, and not the life-record or work achieved. It is easier to collect ana and to make them into the patchwork pattern of a life than to read the character of the man in his writings; and patchwork, of necessity, has more of colour than the homespun web of a peasant-poet. Excerpt from Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott: Two Lives Everybody knows the name of Robert Burns, but, as in the case Of many others, the name is nearly all that is known. He is a poet; no one is ignorant Of that. A Scottish poet; that also is universally known. But by what means his poetic faculty was called forth, at what exact period he lived, how he was received in his own time, how his reputation has been preserved till now, and what are the constituents of his powers, - very few Of us could answer minutely, if ex amined on these points.
