An intellectual memoir by the author of the acclaimed Imagined Communities Born in China, Benedict Anderson spent his childhood in California and Ireland, was educated in England and finally found a home at Cornell University, where he immersed himself in the growing field of Southeast Asian studies. He was expelled from Suharto’s Indonesia after revealing the military to be behind the attempted coup of 1965, an event which prompted reprisals that killed up to a million communists and their supporters. Banned from the country for thirty-five years, he continued his research in Thailand and the Philippines, producing a very fine study of the Filipino novelist and patriot José Rizal in The Age of Globalization. In A Life Beyond Boundaries, Anderson recounts a life spent open to the world. Here he reveals the joys of learning languages, the importance of fieldwork, the pleasures of translation, the influence of the New Left on global thinking, the satisfactions of teaching, and a love of world literature. He discusses the ideas and inspirations behind his best-known work, Imagined Communities (1983), whose complexities changed the study of nationalism. Benedict Anderson died in Java in December 2015, soon after he had finished correcting the proofs of this book. The tributes that poured in from Asia alone suggest that his work will continue to inspire and stimulate minds young and old.

With so much of our lives lived online, we’ve never been more connected—or disconnected from what’s most important to us. It’s time to let go of our curated online worlds and get beyond our need for likes. For all that we think we’re getting out of social media, we’re also getting duped. The perfection echo chamber oftentimes makes us feel like we’re getting left behind. The truth is, life is messy, but curated online fabulousness makes it hard to let our true selves show, and it impedes our ability to have real, meaningful connections. Depression, anxiety, and suicide are also on the rise, and the virtual world is partially to blame, affecting our self-worth, our friendships, and the way we choose to navigate our real lives. As the founder and CEO of Squad, an app company built on connectedness, Isa Watson knows firsthand why we need to learn how to be more genuine. The digital world is her lifeblood, but it’s also been an Achilles’ heel: She struggled privately with some of the biggest challenges life can throw at you, while online she seemed to be living her best life—earning high-profile accolades, taking fabulous trips, and partying with the likes of many big name celebrities. It took a personal crisis to make her realize that she needed to change. In Life Beyond Likes, she gets real, sharing practical guidance on: Getting over the addiction to likes, and letting your true self shine Recognizing your own damaging habits and developing healthy ones Determining when a friendship has run its course Getting comfortable with discomfort in order to make real connections Drawing from a wealth of experiences including being the youngest published chemist in the world, working as executive in the upper echelons at JPMorgan Chase, and founding her own company, Isa helps readers better understand what constitutes success, identify what’s really important, and achieve a balance between the curated online world and the enriching, emotionally nourishing world right in front of us.

Do we have reasonable and rational hope of life after the event I call death? Knowledge is powerful. This book is powerful because it presents knowledge, information, insights, discoveries, experiences, and rational, compelling evidence of life and consciousness after the event I call death. Life Beyond Death, if read, digested, and experienced with an open mind, will greatly help you to understand and, most likely, not be afraid of death anymore as you attain a position and level of consciousness with insights and truths that humans have searched for down through the ages and the search by numerous civilizations for this information and insights. The book addresses, responds, and answers the following questions, among many others. 1) What is a near-death experience? 2) What happens at our death? 3) What are God (Yahweh, Elohim) and Jesus Christ like? 4) How big is God according to Jesus Christ of the Holy Bible? 5) Are animals/pets in heaven? 6) Are our physically deceased loved ones in heaven? 7) What is the relationship between life, soul, spirit, breath, essence, and consciousness, and what do they tell us about death? 8) What are the rational proof and compelling anecdotal evidence to support life beyond death? There is life after death. I know by experience and a lot of research. This book will bring you closer to Godour Father, Creator, and Supreme Level of Consciousness.
