Excerpt from Bulletin of the Department of Labor: No. 34, May, 1901 The female population is in excess only or per cent of the total population, and a comparison with the Spanish census statistics of 1861 and 1887 indicates that the proportion of females is slowly, though steadily, increasing. Of the total population, 31 per cent are under 10 years of age, a higher proportion than is found in any State of the Union, or in any other of the West Indian islands. Deducting this 31 per cent, or from the total number of inhabitants, the remaining constitute the total from which the wage workers of the island must be drawn, although a considerable number of children under the age of 10 (a), chiefly boys, earn the whole or part of a living for them selves, and sometimes even for others, as street peddlers or in the other vocations Of outdoor life in which child labor in the Tropics can be employed. Excerpt from Bulletin of the Department of Labor, Vol. 15: March, 1898 In the social life of working women, the class of homes or clubs included under this title occupies an important sphere. The class may be said to be indigenous to large cities and an outgrowth of the special conditions of life which obtain in such cities. They may be described as homes or clubs in which working girls and young women of good moral character can live at prices within their reach, in which they can find, to some considerable extent, the conveniences, social pleasures, and good influences of a real home, and in which they can secure by combination many comforts and wide opportunities for pleasure and culture.
