Excerpt from Library of Biblical and Theological Literature, Vol. 3 Theological encyclopedia is a survey of all the de partments of theology, with a statement of what has been accomplished in each. It is a branch of Universal Eu cyclopaedia. It does not aim, however, to unite within theologicalen itself the substance of all that deserves to be known, cyclodw but rather to comprehend the further development of the science as conditioned by its historical character; and, also, to describe its form and extent in their inward and outward relations by correctly indicating its limits.' The position of Theological Encyclopaedia is outside the organism of theological science, since its Office is to describe that organism and Open the way into it for the student. On the other hand, how ever, it forms a part of the larger, universal organism of scierwe, and in the character of theological encyclo paedia constitutes a fragment of encyclopaedia in general. Every student should endeavour, at the outset, to gain a general idea of the range of human knowledge, not for the purpose of superficially determining every question, but that he may recognise his true place upon the orbis doctrinae.' Excerpt from Library of Biblical and Theological Literature, Vol. 6 It is not to be thought strange that theories differed. The sub dwerences ject is one of the profoundest. It lies in the mystery OF doctrine Of the divine incarnation. The divine Son invests him self in human nature. SO far the Statement of the incarnation is easily made but the statement leaves us on the surface of the pro found reality. With a merely tactual or sympathetic union of the two natures, and consequently two distinct persons in Christ, the reality of the divine incarnation disappears. With the two distinct natures, and the two classes of divine and human facts, how can he be one person? Is the divine nature humanized, or the human nature deified in him? Or did the union of the two natures result in a third nature different from both, and so provide for the oneness of his personality? The Scriptures make no direct answer to these questions. They give us many Christological facts, but in elementary form, and leave the construction of a doctrine of the person of Christ to the resources of Christian thought. The acute criticisms, and the exe getical interpretations by Barrow are of high consideration to a Biblical Reader - therefore a minute Table of the d104s of Scripture has been prepared; from which the opinions of that Annotator can promptly be understood.
