This book explores an anonymous sixteenth-century portrait of Muley al-Hassan, the Hafsid king of Tunis (ca. 1528–1550), that bears witness to relations between North Africa, the Habsburgs, and the Ottomans. While Muley al-Hassan appears frequently in the vast literature on Charles V Habsburg, he is overshadowed by the emperor. Here he emerges as a protagonist, a figure whose shifting reputation can be traced well into the seventeenth century. Images of the King of Tunis circulated in broadsheets, ephemeral images made for triumphal entries, manuscripts, tapestry designs, engravings, and books. The ceaseless production of Tunisian imagery allowed Europeans to face their North African counterparts through scenes of battle but also through imaginary encounters and festive cross-dressing. This book shows how portraits of Hafsid rulers challenge assumptions about the absolute divide between Christian and Muslim, sovereign and subject, the familiar and the foreign, and they put a face on the entangled histories of the early modern Mediterranean.

The celebrated French artist Edme Bouchardon (1698–1762) is primarily known as a sculptor today, but his contemporaries widely lauded him as a draftsman as well. Talented, highly innovative, and deeply invested in the medium, Bouchardon made an important contribution to the European art and culture of his time, and in particular to the history of drawing. Around two thousand of his drawings survive—most of which bear no relation, conceptual or practical, to his sculpture—yet, remarkably, little scholarly attention has been paid to this aspect of his oeuvre. Professor Dr Guy Delmarcel was Curator of Textiles at the Brussels Koninklijke Musea voor Kunst en Geschiedenis (1975-1990) and Professor of History of Art at the Catholic University of Leuven (1981-2002). He passionately devoted his career to the study of Flemish tapestry. His intensive research on the 'Mobile Frescoes of the North' resulted in numerous articles, books, lectures, and exhibitions, thereby unlocking tapestry to both scholars and the general public. Guy Delmarcel has now been given emeritus status. The Department of Archaeology, History of Art and Musicology decided to honour its former chairman by offering him a Festschrift entirely dedicated to his beloved field of research. Fourteen renowned tapestry scholars from all over the world willingly accepted the invitation to celebrate their esteemed colleague. Throughout the centuries Flemish tapestry has eagerly been collected. In the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times the European elite spent fortunes on these lavish works of art. A number of essays compiled in the present volume focus on the patronage and collections of European kings and noblemen. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries European and American museums became important collectors of Flemish tapestry, as is demonstrated by some museological studies presented in Studies in Honour of Guy Delmarcel.
