Excerpt from Letters to Betsey I have read the manuscript of Letters to Betsey with a great deal of pleasure, since both the author and her adventures in China are well known to me. So many of the books which purport to tell personal experiences are made in America, that it is a pleasure to come upon one which is simply an unvarnished state ment of the real experiences of a real missionary. That is the fact in regard to Letters to Betsey. Many workers in our missionary societies are un familiar with just the sort of intimate details about every-day life that Miss Cody has given, in these letters of hers actually written to friends at home, which have received very little editing and are therefore all the more valuable as a true transcript from the life of an American girl in China. Three letters written to William and Betsey Rhoades in East Hamilton, Madison County, New York, from siblings and other family members living in rural Illinois between 1845 and 1848. The first letter, dated in Walnut Grove, Knox County, on May 5, 1845, is from Newton Russell and Celinda Murdock Fuller, the mother of his first wife and sister of Betsey Rhoades. Newton describes daily life in Knox County, including the growing wool industry on the prairie, hauling wheat and pork to market, and the ease of plowing flat land. Both Newton and Celinda mention the Moon family and some of their hardships, as well as news regarding Nauvoo, Illinois, following the killing of Joseph and Hyrum Smith in 1844 and the exodus of the Mormon community from the town. The second and third letters--one dated in "Troy" on October 4, probably 1847, and the other dated in Hebron, McHenry County, Illinois, on April 2, 1848--are from Polly Loomis, sister of William C. Rhoades. She writes about the hardships she is enduring on the prairie with her husband William and children. After attending some Methodists meetings, she converts from Millerism to the Methodist church.
