Excerpt from Letters and Sketches of Sermons, in Threee Volumes, Vol. 2 of 3 I have been interested in an account given by a friend, who had placed his son with an uncle who was not very friendly to what they denominate my principles. The good gentleman was in the habit of taking his family to church on the Sabbath; and on Sunday morning, the child, about twelve years of age, was ordered to get ready to attend with the rest. He sighed deeply, and discovered manifest reluctance Come, my boy, said the uncle, why do you not get ready Why, Sir, I would rather not go. Why so, pray I believe what they call Mr. Murray's doctrine, Sir. You do 1 Pray what have you to do with Mr. Murray's doctrine Why, Sir, I think it is God's word, I read it all in the Bible. Well, suppose it is, why should that discourage you from going to meeting Why, Sir, it makes me feel bad, when I hear the minister telling the people the word of God is a lie Why, you young rogue, you never heard any minister say so. But, Sir, they say our Saviour is not the Saviour of all men, and God says he is, and that is saying the word of God is a lie. Well, my boy, if you stay with me, you most go to meeting. If you insist upon it, Sir, I must but I am sure, Sir, you would not like to go your self if you loved God. Why so, pray Because, Sir, if you loved God you would not like to hear so much had said of him. The observations of this child were impressed upon the mind of the uncle, he could not erase them, and happening to be in this town on business, he has attended the ministry of reconciliation, and has been so fully convinced of the truth, that he attended me home to my lodgings, communicated many particulars relative to the exercise of his mind, repeated this story of his nephew, and confessed himself fully established in the truth. Excerpt from Letters, and Sketches of Sermons, Vol. 3 of 3 Placed in their own proper light, the sacred records will appear to be what they really are, a consistent and a luminous revelation. I confess I have only caught a glimpse of the glory of these divinely consolatory truths; but I have seen more of their divinity, when consulting no other testimony, than while encompassed by a crowd of commentators. Excerpt from Complete Works, Vol. 1: Comprising Sermons, Letters, Lectures, Speeches, Etc Having heard many persons, admirers of the late Archbishop Hughes, express a wish that his public lectures, letters and speeches might be collected and published in book form, the compiler of this volume has, after some deliberation, undertaken the task, which, he trusts, will prove acceptable to the Catholic community in general. The following pages are the first installment, and will be immediately followed by another volume of about the same size, which will complete the work. The biographical sketch merely touches upon the principal events in His Grace's career, but is the most complete one yet published. The speeches of His Grace on the School Question - a question which first brought him prominently before the New York public - will, no doubt, be read with pleasure as well as profit by thousands who have heard of these great efforts of Dr. Hughes, but who have had no chance heretofore of reading them. His speeches before the Board of Aldermen, as well as his great Three Days' Speech in Carroll Hall on this question, will be found in this volume in full. Other important documents are also given entire. The concluding volume will also contain important writings of Archbishop Hughes, which should be read by every Catholic in the land. Excerpt from One Hundred and Ninety Sermons, Vol. 2 of 3: On the Hundred and Nineteenth Psalm Reason II. - The sooner we turn to the ways of God, the better we speed. How so? I. Partly in this, that the work goes on the more kindly, as being car ried forth in the strength of the present influence and impulsion of grace; whereas, if the heart grow cold again, it will be the more difficult. A blow While the iron is hot, doth more than ten at another time when it grows cold again so, when thy heart grows cold, thou wilt not have that advantage as when thou art under a warm conviction. And indeed, that is the Devil's cheat to speak of hereafter, to elude the importunity of the present conviction that is upon you. You know, when the waters were stirred, then was the time to put in he that stepped in first had experience of the sanative virtue of the waters (john v. So, when the heart is stirred, we should not lose this advantage, but come on upon that call. There are several metaphors in Scripture that do express this: sometimes, we must Open when God knocks (cant. We must enter when God opens, lest the door be shut against us (matt. We must come forth when he bids us, as Lot out of Sodom, lest we perish: when a thing is done speedily and in season, it is a great advantage. Excerpt from Irenaeus Letters: Second Series On the second Sabbath in October next I expect to preach my semi-centennial sermon in Bedford, N. Y., where I preached my first sermon fifty years ago. There and then I will testify to the loving-kindness of my Matteawan people, and to the sorrow with which I resigned my pastoral work from total failure of health - a work which I have never been able to resume. Other and far better men have followed me in that pleasant field; the generation that knew me has passed away; few know that one of my name was ever a keeper of the ock on that mountain-slope; but them that God gave me he will keep unto that day when it will be my exceeding joy to present them before our Father's face in the kingdom in heaven.
