One area which keeps the corporate executive up at night is compliance. With the increase in the enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and the introduction of similar or stronger legislation such as the UK Bribery Act, it is mandatory that any company doing business internationally operates in compliance with these anti-corruption and anti-bribery regimes. This book provides practical lessons on how to run a business in an ethical manner, which will ensure companies are compliant. It explains what the FCPA is and how it is enforced. It gives the corporate lawyer, compliance practitioner or business executive specific guidance on how to navigate these waters with real-life practical lessons learned from the most recent FCPA enforcement actions, Opinion Releases and current best practices on how to manage a compliance program.

Over the past few years I have tried to provide the compliance practitioner with solid information that can be used to implement, review and enhance a US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) or UK Bribery Act based compliance program. I am often asked to collect my blog posting regarding what are the current best practices for an anti-corruption/anti-bribery compliance program. In other words, what are the specifics of a compliance program? This volume is an attempt to provide the compliance practitioner with information that can be used for the 'nuts and bolts' of compliance. Using a format similar to the recent US Department of Justice (DOJ) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) guide, "A Resource Guide to the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA)" [the "Guidance"], I have included some of my thoughts on what you can do to create and maintain a best practices compliance program. I have also included some of my prior articles on how to create and maintain such a compliance program using the Six Principles of Adequate Procedures compliance regime under the UK Bribery Act.

In 2022, podcaster Tom Fox interviewed Loren C. Steffy about the issues and themes in his debut novel, The Big Empty. As Fox saw it, the book may have been set in 1999, but many of the issues at the heart of the story are even more relevant today than they were then. The result was a five-part podcast series, The Big Empty and Economic Issues Facing 21st Century Texas. The series examined key issues that the book examines: Water, power, land investment, housing, and of course, the clash of cultures. It won Communicators Awards for Excellence in a Limited Series and Distinction in Business. Now, the series is available as an ebook.
