Lenore, a thief, is on the run from the law, from the brutal Enforcers. Just when she thinks she's found safety by assuming a new identity with a wealthy but eccentric family, she discovers they've got secrets of their own. Big ones. As does everyone in this series. And, of course, someone who knows her real identity is chasing after her. Uncover what everyone is hiding by joining Lenore as she... -Crosses paths with a mysterious crime lord bearing a magical oath and a stark warning, -Travels to exotic lands and finds even more danger than the city holds, -And faces off against a death-obsessed cult. Can Lenore find the courage to forge her own path, or will the world of lies she's built come crashing down? Out of the Shadows, Into the Fire, and Across the Ice are the first three books in the captivating Broken Gears young adult steampunk fantasy series. Fans of the Finishing School series by Gail Carriger and Garth Nix's Old World universe will delight as this Victorian-era-esque world unfolds before them. A multi-layered steampunk fantasy tale of colorful characters, lost magic and technology, and subterfuge that promises to entrance. If you like smart heroines, forgotten magic, and rich Victorian settings, then you'll love Lenore's intrigue-and-adventure storyline. "Out of the Shadows features great prose, a gripping plot, and characters that will remain with readers long after they are done reading the story." —Reader's Favorite Editorial Review: "Dana Fraedrich has a vast eye for details and a flawless knack with complex relationships. This world is primarily steampunk, but traces of fantasy and paranormal are in the background, staying in the shadows as these characters are forced to hide certain aspects of their lives. Lenore is often judged for her status, age, and for being a woman, but she doesn't let the world define her. She uses it to create a mask to hide behind, but this doesn't take away from her brazen, opinionated, and spunky personality. Into the Fire is a riveting adventure that will hook you from page one, with a strong-willed heroine, complex characters, romance, and complicated relationships." Recent years have seen an enormous surge of interest in fiber arts, with works made of thread on display in art museums around the world. But this art form only began to transcend its origins as a humble craft in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and it wasn’t until the 1950s and 1960s that artists used the fiber arts to build critical practices that challenged the definitions of painting, drawing, and sculpture. One of those artists was Lenore Tawney (1907–2007). Raised and trained in Chicago before she moved to New York, Tawney had a storied career. She was known for employing an ancient Peruvian gauze weave technique to create a painterly effect that appeared to float in space rather than cling to the wall, as well as for being one of the first artists to blend sculptural techniques with weaving practices and, in the process, pioneered a new direction in fiber art. Despite her prominence on the New York art scene, however, she has only recently begun to receive her due from the greater art world. Accompanying a retrospective at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, this catalog features a comprehensive biography of Tawney, additional essays on her work, and two hundred full-color illustrations, making it of interest to contemporary artists, art historians, and the growing audience for fiber art. Copublished with the John Michael Kohler Arts Center.
