Excerpt from The Legend of the Trailing Arbutus N or yet from notes of warbling bird Was this strange tale in wonder heard; Not dancing stream, nor sighing breeze, Nor insects humming in the trees The story was not told by these. A tiny voice, so low and sweet, Made clearest music at my feet, And as I stooped to listen well That I to others, too, might tell, A blossom from arbutus vine Lifted its sweet face to mine. Excerpt from The Legend of the Trailing Arbutus There is a beautiful legend connected with the dainty trailing arbutus, which runs as follows: The arbutus, most delicate and fragrant of all our wild flowers, was created as a climbing vine to cover Eve's bower in the Garden of Eden. She tended and watered the lovely plant, and learned to love it above all other flowers in the Garden. After the fall and banishment of our first parents from Paradise, the arbutus vine became so lonely and missed Eve so greatly that it crept down from its bower and trailed through the Garden and out into the world in search of her who loved it. It is still seeking her through woods and waste places in a search that never ends, and each springtime sends forth the delicate fragrance of its pink and white blossoms to tell of its faithfulness. Download Andromeda Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from Andromeda: And Other Poems You all know the old heathen story, that telleth how the Ladye Mother of Andromeda was punished for boasting her Daughter was fairer than Queen Venus, and the Beauty placed on a Rock to be devoured, and how happily she was rescued by Sir Perseus coming home from the conquest of the Gorgons, and aimed with Medusa's Head, that turned living things into stone: and how Sir Perseus did for his reward gain her hand in marriage, as that old legend fairly sheweth. Download To One From Arcady Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from To One From Arcady: And Other Poems Sometimes I dreamed you came from Arcady, That you have lain upon the golden lawns In drowsy noontides with bronze-breasted fauns, Or mingled in their moonlight revelry, Danced 'mid the sapphire hills which girt the sea; That you have seen from out the reedy grass A pearl - limbed naiad loom (with hair like brass) Flecked' by the sun and shadows' tracery! Aye, still the forest fragrance cleaves and clings To your brown body and your perfumed hair; Still in your movement lurks wild woodland grace Of wind-stirred poplars (that make leafy lair For startled dryads when the satyr sings); Still you bring visions of each God-loved place!
