He brought glamour and imagination into the sport of mountaineering as few guides have done before him. Recalling his personality and amusing stories one should not forget that his approach to mountains was first and foremost an aesthetic one; he saw a peak first as something beautiful—the technical problem was always secondary — and nothing counted beside that vision. Of all the mountain guides who came to Canada in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Conrad Kain is probably the most respected and well known. In this internationally anticipated reissue of Where the Clouds Can Go-first published in 1935, with subsequent editions in 1954 and 1979-Rocky Mountain Books has accentuated the original text with an expanded selection of over 50 archival images that celebrate the accomplishments of Conrad Kain in the diverse mountain landscapes of North America, Europe and New Zealand. The new foreword by acclaimed mountaineer and filmmaker Pat Morrow puts Kain's mountaineering adventures, numerous explorations and devout appreciation of nature into a contemporary context, ensuring that the exploits of this remarkable individual will remain part of international mountain culture for years to come. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Kain's arrival in Canada, the Conrad Kain Centennial Society was formed in 2008 to celebrate his many achievements and to develop legacy projects in his memory. This expanded edition of Kain's book will help carry his passion for mountaineering to a new generation of readers and adventurers.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 30. Chapters: List of Legacy of Kain characters, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Raziel, Legacy of Kain: Defiance, Blood Omen 2: Legacy of Kain, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Amy Hennig, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2. Excerpt: Kain is the central character of the Legacy of Kain series. Initially portrayed as a murdered nobleman brought back from the dead as a vampire to take revenge against his murderers, Kain comes to embrace his vampiric powers and turns his back on his duty as the predestined guardian of the Pillar of Balance to rule Nosgoth in its decay. However, he develops a legitimate desire to save his homeland by defying his fate and returning the Pillars to the Vampires. Raziel is a player character of several games in the Legacy of Kain series and the titular character of the Soul Reaver sub-series. He is both referred to personally as a reaver of souls, and is wielder of the weapon known as the Soul Reaver (which also happens to be his own future soul trapped in the form of the physical blade). Raziel stands in contrast to Kain as an ethically upright character; however, the treacherous situations in which he finds himself rarely lend themselves to unambiguous ethical judgments, and he often ends up doing the wrong thing for the right reason. Anarcrothe is an antagonist character in Blood Omen, one of the insane sorcerers whom Kain is tasked with killing in order to proceed in the game. Anarcrothe appears only in Blood Omen where he is voiced by Richard Doyle. A member of the Circle of Nine, Anarcrothe serves as the Guardian of the Pillar of States. His experiments in the art of alchemy have left him with unsightly scars. After the Circle was driven mad, Anarcrothe used his magic to create the Dark Eden area along with fellow Guardians Bane the Druid and Dejoule the Energist. During the course of the game Kain confronts...

The cross-cultural interactions of Japanese videogames and the West—from DIY localization by fans to corporate strategies of “Japaneseness.” In the early days of arcades and Nintendo, many players didn’t recognize Japanese games as coming from Japan; they were simply new and interesting games to play. But since then, fans, media, and the games industry have thought further about the “Japaneseness” of particular games. Game developers try to decide whether a game's Japaneseness is a selling point or stumbling block; critics try to determine what elements in a game express its Japaneseness—cultural motifs or technical markers. Games were “localized,” subjected to sociocultural and technical tinkering. In this book, Mia Consalvo looks at what happens when Japanese games travel outside Japan, and how they are played, thought about, and transformed by individuals, companies, and groups in the West. Consalvo begins with players, first exploring North American players’ interest in Japanese games (and Japanese culture in general) and then investigating players’ DIY localization of games, in the form of ROM hacking and fan translating. She analyzes several Japanese games released in North America and looks in detail at the Japanese game company Square Enix. She examines indie and corporate localization work, and the rise of the professional culture broker. Finally, she compares different approaches to Japaneseness in games sold in the West and considers how Japanese games have influenced Western games developers. Her account reveals surprising cross-cultural interactions between Japanese games and Western game developers and players, between Japaneseness and the market.
