These lecturers provide a clear introduction to Lie group methods for determining and using symmetries of differential equations, a variety of their applications in gas dynamics and other nonlinear models as well as the author's remarkable contribution to this classical subject. It contains material that is useful for students and teachers but cannot be found in modern texts. For example, the theory of partially invariant solutions developed by Ovsyannikov provides a powerful tool for solving systems of nonlinear differential equations and investigating complicated mathematical models.

Volume 2 offers a unique blend of classical results of Sophus Lie with new, modern developments and numerous applications which span a period of more than 100 years. As a result, this reference is up to date, with the latest information on the group theoretic methods used frequently in mathematical physics and engineering. Volume 2 is divided into three parts. Part A focuses on relevant definitions, main algorithms, group classification schemes for partial differential equations, and multifaceted possibilities offered by Lie group theoretic philosophy. Part B contains the group analysis of a variety of mathematical models for diverse natural phenomena. It tabulates symmetry groups and solutions for linear equations of mathematical physics, classical field theory, viscous and non-Newtonian fluids, boundary layer problems, Earth sciences, elasticity, plasticity, plasma theory (Vlasov-Maxwell equations), and nonlinear optics and acoustics. Part C offers an English translation of Sophus Lie's fundamental paper on the group classification and invariant solutions of linear second-order equations with two independent variables. This will serve as a concise, practical guide to the group analysis of partial differential equations.

This text is an addition to the existing literature about the symmetrical properties of sound waves. The authors clarify the algebraic and analytical nature of the dynamic acoustic problem. Operator equations which are typical for linear systems and the more general Lie method are considered, which can be applied even to nonlinear problems. The information obtained allows the reader to construct different types of analytical solutions of the different acoustic equation. The acoustic differential equation describes sound waves in elastic media. If the media is non-homogeneous then the acoustic equation is generally very complicated and its exact solutions or analytical solutions may be considered as rare. This volume applies Lie algebra and Lie group techniques to separate independent variables and obtains exact analytical solutions. Special attention is paid to homogeneous and non-homogeneous media with different symmetry properties. The full wave acoustic equation is considered as well as the so-called phase acoustic equation which arises in the short-wave approximation.

Group Analysis of Differential Equations provides a systematic exposition of the theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras and its application to creating algorithms for solving the problems of the group analysis of differential equations. This text is organized into eight chapters. Chapters I to III describe the one-parameter group with its tangential field of vectors. The nonstandard treatment of the Banach Lie groups is reviewed in Chapter IV, including a discussion of the complete theory of Lie group transformations. Chapters V and VI cover the construction of partial solution classes for the given differential equation with a known admitted group. The theory of differential invariants that is developed on an infinitesimal basis is elaborated in Chapter VII. The last chapter outlines the ways in which the methods of group analysis are used in special issues involving differential equations. This publication is a good source for students and specialists concerned with areas in which ordinary and partial differential equations play an important role.

The theory of pseudo-differential operators (which originated as singular integral operators) was largely influenced by its application to function theory in one complex variable and regularity properties of solutions of elliptic partial differential equations. Given here is an exposition of some new classes of pseudo-differential operators relevant to several complex variables and certain non-elliptic problems. Originally published in 1979. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
