Excerpt from Lectures on Portions of the Psalms Give ear to my words, 0 Lord; consider my meditation. Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God for unto thee will I pray. My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, 0 Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness neither shall evil dwell with thee. The foolish shall not stand in thy sight thou hatest all workers of iniquity. Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing; the Lord will abhor the bloody and deceitful man. But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple. Psalm v. 1. - 8. Excerpt from Parochial Lectures on the Psalms It has been the wish of the author of the follow ing exposition of the Psalms, to put the reader in possession of the wealth beneath, as well as that upon their surface. This he has aimed to accom plish by so explaining the language, imagery, and allusions, historical or personal, of the verse or psalm, as to bring out the thought of the inspired singer, together with the feeling with which we may suppose him to have uttered it. His great aim has been to present all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ and his gospel, a book of thoughts on the Psalms, derived directly from a truthful exposi tion of the Psalms themselves. He has laboured to get at the mind of the Spirit in the psalm, and in every part of the psalm, ' and having, as he hoped, ascertained that, he has been satisfied with giving it utterance without blending words of his own with it. In treating the Psalms in this way only, did the author think that he could make them what they in fact are, utterances of the universal human heart, and also of the heart of Him in whose hand are the hearts of us all, to turn and fashion us as he will. Allowing the Psalms to utter themselves only in their own inspired voice, it is impossible to make them speak in the tones of any sect or party. Excerpt from Sixty Lectures on the Several Portions of the Psalms: As They Are Appointed to Be Read in the Morning and Evening Services of the Church of England These Lectures were commenced and continued under the hope, that with the Divine Blessing they might prove in their delivery both acceptable and profitable to the Church committed to the author's ministry: and having been spared to conclude them, he has reason for indulging a humble confidence that his labour has not been in vain in the Lord. Excerpt from Lectures on the Origin and Growth Psalms The following lectures were delivered at the Johns Hopkins University, during the winter of 1878-79, before a general audience. The form in which they were given was probably not that in which their author would have finally embodied his researches, or have permanently submitted them as a subject of scholarly criticism. It has seemed, however, to many beside the publishers of this volume, that these lectures should be placed before a larger audience; not simply as the only completed work left by a scholar of very remarkable independence and promise, but as a most valuable contribution to the study to which his life was devoted - the reverent and critical investigation of the History and Literature of the Hebrew Scriptures, It is entirely certain that Professor Murray's early death, occurring but a few days after the closing of this course, took from his branch of learning one of the most earnest and able students it has counted in America. Before the publication of these lectures, it was necessary to add to a few passages brief explanatory notes, verifications of references, transliterations, &c., such as the author himself would have supplied to aid the general reader unacquainted with Oriental languages. This scholarly service has been very kindly performed for the volume by the Rev. Dr. C. H. Toy, who has, however, in every case, affixed his initial to the note thus furnished. Excerpt from The Varied Beauty of the Psalms These chapters contain the substance of a course of lectures delivered at Temple emanu-el, New York, on Monday morn ings, in the months of November and De cember, 1915. The lectures included i1 lustrative readings from the Psalms and general literature, which probably formed their chief interest, and which are, at most, but alluded to in this little book. In publishing the latter, however, the author hopes he may help point out some of the many beauties of Israel's immortal poetry. When first given, the lectures were heard by a group of loyal and appreciative hear ers, to all of whom the author feels grate ful, and to one of the most faithful and most generous of whom he has taken the liberty of dedicating these pages.
