Excerpt from Lectures on Dramatic Literature All. Fair is foul, and foul is fair Hover through the fog and filthy air. Here is the hand of the incomparable master. Here, a scene composed of about half-a-dozen lines, is our interest already strongly excited. There is not in the whole course of the drama beside, ancient or modern, an in stance where so much is effected in so narrow a compass. We are at once upon the tiptoe of definite expectation. We exclaim to ourselves There's matter here! Such personages do not busy themselves about nothing, nor can he have a common part to act who is the theme of their conversation, the subject of their solicitude. Excerpt from Art of the Drama This book is not a history of the drama. Nor is it a manual for the multitudes who aspire to write plays and sell them. It is a tool for the use of those who wish to deepen their understanding and enhance their enjoyment of plays witnessed in the theater or read in the study. As a textbook, it may prove useful in the study of the history of the drama or of the drama as a literary type, or in such a course as the Introduction to the Study of Drama as given at the University of Chicago. The book is divided into three parts, each of which emphasizes a particular aspect of the drama. Part I is mainly devoted to the historical aspect of the drama, the spirit of the age, the nature of the theater and audience in each of the major periods in dramatic his tory. It also contains a general discussion of the major forms or types of drama - tragedy, comedy, melodrama, and farce - and a more detailed consideration of the types of drama and comedy characteristic of each period. Part II considers the major modes of drama - classicism, romanticism, realism, sentimentalism, symbol ism, and expressionism. Part III concerns the major problems of dramatic technique and the characteristic solutions of those prob lems in the various types and modes and periods of drama. There is no question that it would have been more logical to con sider first the technical, second the aesthetic, and third the historical approach to the study of drama, and students of a logical turn of mind will have no difficulty in using the text in that order. But we have come to feel that it will, in general, be preferable for the student to master the facts in Part I before he ventures upon the more theoretical considerations of Parts II and III. Excerpt from A Handbook of the Drama: Its Philosophy and Teaching; With a Chapter on the Law of Copyright in Its Relation to Dramatic Work HE remarkable progress which has, within the last half-century, been made in all branches of the drama is a subject which will well repay close and criti cal examination. There has never existed any depart ment of art so closely allied to Nature and her varying conditions of existence as that of the drama, in its connection with the actor's art, and with the analysis of the passions and emotions of the human soul. Know ledge concerning the development of this subject, to be gleaned at all, must be gleaned partly through the pages of dramatic literature, and partly through our personal contact with the theatre. And knowledge of this kind is distinctly valuable, because it embraces much of the hidden mechanism by which the mind is regulated and affected. The extensive metaphysical elaborations which have, from time to time, occupied the genius of speen lative enquiry, have been the means of placing before the student of psychology the intricate operations of the mind, as its workings have been reduced to a science.
