Dogs are often thought of as obedient, loyal animals, but their repertoire of attributes and emotions stretches across the spectrum. They're also advanced communicators, peace ambassadors and effective thinkers, with unique avatars and identities. From their puppy eyes to their protective stance, there is a lot of fragility and balance in their communication. Written by a renowned canine behaviourist, Dog Knows navigates the journeys of several dogs through life, embraces their vulnerability, and helps us decode their nuanced communication strategies and messages. Rooted in reality and science, and woven into an engrossing narrative, the book handles the enigmatic world of dog communication and intuition with great sensitivity.

Recent research suggests chat dogs can engage in social learning which includes the ability to observe the actions of other dogs and imitate them to learn new behaviors. The big news for dog trainers is that author Claudia Fugazza and her colleagues in Europe have discovered that dogs can also imitate people. This natural skill can be used to teach dogs new behaviors using the Do As I Do protocol presented in this book-DVD combination. The "Do As I Do" method is particularly useful in working with service dogs and canine athletes who must masters skills such as ringing a bell, jumping over a hurdle, spinning and dozens more. A dog can be a wonderful companion with enormous affection for you and your family. His keen senses and alertness can provide you with much-needed protection, but it is important to remember that you must be prepared to care for your pet for the next twelve or more years. Like a child, it will depend on you, not only for its health and well-being, but also for dedicated training in order to become a friendly, well-mannered dog that is a pleasure for you and others. It must also be remembered that we do not live in a dog's world but that our dogs are the ones who must learn to live in a human world. It is therefore our responsibility to adequately prepare them for the unfamiliar environment in which we place them. Society does not punish a child for pulling a dog's tail but will punish the dog for biting that child. Before a handler can train his dog, he must understand what is involved in the training process. He needs to understand what is required from him and the dog in each part of each of the different obedience exercises. He must be able to teach his dog what it is expected to know, help it as much as possible, and make it as easy as possible for the dog. He needs to know about positive reinforcement in order to get the targeted behavior to recur and to reward good behavior. Above all, he needs to know when and how much to praise and what to do when the dog is not performing a task it was taught. All this he cannot learn during the relatively short time he spends each week with the instructor at the club. Six days a week he is alone at home with his dog and needs to continue to build on the training he received at the club. He needs to remember the sequence of training steps and how to break them up into the small component parts to be mastered by the dog. And when he becomes confused, he needs help or notes to refer to! This is what I had in mind when I decided to write these notes on basic dog obedience training. There are many basic training methods from clicker training to the more traditional methods that can be used to train a dog for obedience work. The perfect training method does not exist; otherwise, we would all have had copies made and used on our dogs. No, we are all learning and improving. I have adopted an eclectic approach to dog training—that is, I have, over many years, studied different training methods and selected from them what will work for most dogs. At times, however, I may use a combination of these methods, or I may shift from one method to another, depending on the training need or exercise. What is very important to me is that the reader must not only know about the best methods of teaching dogs today but must understand why a dog behaves the way it does. Above all, it must be remembered that dog training must be fun for both dog and trainer. Most dog owners do not ask much of their dogs: they ask only that the dogs obey some basic commands and that they are well behaved at home and in public. That is why all dogs should, at least, do the Canine Good Citizen test. I hope my notes will add to your knowledge of basic dog obedience training and that your trained dog will bring much joy to you and your family. Jan Meyer BA (SA), MEd DCRT (US), HP (MT)

"If you know about dogs you know about life" is the message Andrew Ledford teaches in his book Dog Training - Best Friends Learning Together. Through a seven point process developed from the author's 20-plus-years experience he demonstrates what dog owners can learn about themselves through the antics of man's not always understood best friend. "The human dog/model works so well because learning about dogs includes the complexities, the trials and the tribulations of self-governance, social responsibility, intellect and emotions. To be successful at training dogs requires the same skills used for success in other areas of life," states Andrew. Best Friends Learning Together shows how human and dog behavior mix in a dance of responsibility, understanding and bonding. Best Friends Learning Together can help information age humans learn how to decode the rules of nature from the human/pet experience. Part One indicates this isn't an orthodox training book by stating that it's "more about how humans look at or approach dog training objectives than a how-to manual on training techniques." Andrew's dog training system has proven successful for educating both owners and their dogs. Each chapter is a blend of traditional Chinese and Japanese philosophy, learning theory, behavior modification, animal psychology and ethology. As Andrew travels around the world he really enjoys watching the animals. A great deal of inspiration for the book came from observing the street dogs of Taiwan, one of many stories he shares in this book. In Best Friends Learning Together he also discusses the importance of early puppy socialization as opposed to outdated recommendations of puppy isolation. Also covered are additional skills for a dog friendly lifestyle, including tips for training with positive reinforcement; how to interpret a dog s body language; lessons on the calming effects of Chi Energy Touch training as well as spatial drills that combine the dog's natural traits with angles of movement borrowed from Tai Chi Chuan. All this comes under the banner of Ledford's own RenChenZa(r) Lifestyle Support Dog(r) program, which falls "somewhere between science and the inner states we call feelings." This book helps people weave facts into their significant emotional preferences with seven important Points of Reference: 1- Rules of a Chosen Pursuit, 2 - Rules of Nature, 3 - Social Rules, 4 - Personal Rules, 5 - Rule of Progression, 6 - History and 7 - Acceptance. RenChenZa(r) is a multi ethnic three-part Chinese influenced word that together means human-dog-wisdom. Andrew further explains, "A Lifestyle Support Dog(r) is a friend that helps us reach for our purpose and fulfill our potential in a world of increasingly cold-automation." In Dog Training-Best Friends Learning Together Andrew gives the human side of the training team a strategy for understanding and for success. It's his dream that those who understand the human/dog experience can make the world a better
