"This series of seminars explores the unique challenges, constraints, and opportunities that women face today as they assume leadership positions in national security and foreign policy organizations. Written as lesson plans for a Georgetown University undergraduate course, each topic can be accessed independently or as part of a series. While each section addresses a specific topic, there are common themes that run throughout the series and leaders may choose to build connections across multiple chapters. The first chapters consider the current state of women’s participation in diplomacy and defense via the perceptions and biases that exist today within the various agencies and in society at large. An academic understanding of subconscious bias and organizational culture provide the backbone for discussions around stereotypes and discrimination. The goal of these chapters is to establish a common starting point: to reassure women that what they may have seen or experienced is real, they are not alone, and there is research to back up and name these phenomenon. For men, these chapters may heighten awareness of subconscious bias and societal pressure and stereotypes, allowing them to become more effective allies and champions in breaking down these barriers.
