ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to assess community college senior student affairs officers' demographics, educational backgrounds, and leadership development experiences, as related to their mastery of the leadership skills outlined in the American Association of Community Colleges Competencies for Community College Leaders (AACC Competencies) (2005), and to determine which of these leadership skills is deemed most critical for community college senior student affairs officers to perform their jobs effectively. Furthermore, this study examined community college senior student affairs officers' perceptions of their preparedness for the AACC Competencies, and explored a variety of methods for providing leadership development.

ABSTRACT: The community college environment is a complex and ever-changing system that requires effective leadership. The leadership characteristics in community colleges have been investigated substantially with studies primarily focused on the presidency and the pathway of the traditional academic pipeline. But as community colleges have struggled to do more with less, it has become even more imperative that the leadership of the organization approach turbulent times with greater innovation and entrepreneurial spirit, filling upcoming and increasing leadership vacancies with new talent. This study looked at the leadership characteristics of workforce development administrators. The purpose of this study was to analyze the talent found in the workforce development departments of selected community colleges by examining the management and leadership characteristics of workforce development personnel. The results of the statistical analysis showed some statistically different leadership characteristics and competencies between workforce administrators and other community college administrators. The workforce administrators were found to have characteristics of significantly higher leadership attributes for drive, which includes attributes of being dynamic, striving, and enterprising. The workforce administrators were also found to have significantly higher competency potentials for achieving success, which includes such factors as taking action, pursuing goals, and tackling business challenges. This data can serve to inform current presidents and aspiring leaders and educators about the specific areas of strength of workforce administrators, as well as areas to be targeted to better prepare tomorrow's leaders.

ABSTRACT: This research examined how two decidedly different groups of community college presidents from across the United States viewed the competencies, characteristics, and professional skills identified by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) (2005) as important for effective community college leadership. The two groups participating in the research were from small, single-campus colleges serving rural populations and from large, multiple-campus colleges serving urban populations. The participants were asked to identify those activities and experiences that they found helpful in developing the AACC leadership competencies. The results from this research suggest that community college presidents from both sizes of college campuses widely regarded the AACC competencies as important to effective leadership. The respondents also provided insight into the experiences that helped form the characteristics related to the development of the competencies. Practical implications for the development and hiring of leaders to perform senior leadership roles within the community college system are offered.

Abstract: In recent years, concerns over the future of community college leadership have intensified because of the looming retirements of college presidents who started their careers in the 1960s and 1970s. With senior administrative turnovers continuing to rise at the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Academic Officer levels, community colleges are looking for ways to prepare for leadership transition and succession in order to continue to operate effectively. Although the middle managerial position is often used as a stepping stone for senior administrative positions, little is known about the mid-level administrators and their roles. With little research on mid-level administrators, their roles, and the processes in which they develop their leadership skills, community colleges are not equipped with resources to tap into this potential and abundant leadership pool successfully. The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of mid-level administrators in California community colleges, the challenges they face in their positions, and more importantly, to explore the learning process that mid-level administrators engage in to cultivate their leadership skills to address those challenges. The study was guided by the following research questions: (1) What are the leadership and managerial challenges that California community college mid-level administrators face in their positions? (2) How do community college mid-level administrators develop and cultivate their leadership skills to address leadership and managerial challenges in California community college settings? (3) What leadership skills, knowledge, and competencies do mid-level administrators believe they need in order to be effective in their position as well as their career overall? And (4) What leadership development resources and support do mid-level administrators feel they would need in order to advance to the next administrative level position? The research methodology was a qualitative approach to understanding their leadership experiences. Data were collected by means of one-on-one interviews and a brief questionnaire. Data were collected from 12 participants who currently work as deans or directors in community colleges in southern California. Findings revealed that challenges to the mid-level administrators include managing employees, campus politics, and an increasing workload. The findings also highlighted the importance of leadership mentoring and training for mid-level administrators so they can be effective in their current position and to prepare them for career advancement. Recommendations for policy and practice include adding new language in accreditation standards to focus on effective leadership and implementing ongoing managerial and leadership trainings for mid-level administrators.
