Excerpt from The Elders' Journal of the Southern States Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1905, Vol. 2 In order that all weekly reports reach the office about the same time, it will be necessary for them to be mailed Saturday night, after mailing the summary of the work of the week, may be added to the report of the following day and thereby a complete account of the work accomplished by each Elder will be kept without mistake. It should also be remembered that these reports must be complete and therefore it is essential that particular attention be given to them. The work will be preserved, bound into volumes and thus become a history of the work done in the mission field. An oversight in the printed matter on the reports occurred and on this account it will be neces sary to write upon it the name of the conference. The proper place would be just over the name of the mission. In signing the summary it is well to write the name in full. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 90: August 2, 1928 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid - Isaiah 29: 13, 14. If you wish to know when and where this prophecy began to be fulfilled, follow me down the ages to the spring of the year 1820, and into the rural districts of New York State, where then dwelt a humble family by the name of Smith. One member of that family was a boy between fourteen and fifteen years of age. Anxious for his soul's salvation, young Joseph Smith went into the woods near his father's home, and inquired of the Lord which of all the churches then extant was the true Church of Christ, in order that he might join it. While praying he was seized upon by an evil power, which strove to destroy him; but he was delivered by a vision of light, in the midst of which stood two glorious Personages, one of whom, pointing to the other, said. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 98: November 26, 1936 Further evidence that Jesus Christ is the God of Israel that He was chosen as Redeemer of the world before the foundations of the earth were laid; that He preached the Gospel nu to Adam and his posterity and that it was He of humble birth in Bethlehem who died on Calvary and rose again, are offered to the world by the Latter day Saints. Apostle Bal lard, in his discourse, quotes freely from the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants, which stand to convince Jew and Gentile of the divinity of the Saviour. These two books together with the Holy Bible and Pearl of Great Price are the standard works of the Church, three of which stand as new wit nesses for God. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 89: March 3, 1927 Satan has character, which though vile is persuasive, enticing, magnetic. So furtive are his ways, so wily his plans, so artful his manoeuvrings, that unless we know something about him personally and his awful history, we may be ensnared in his widespread net. It does not follow, however, that to know the devil is to yield to his will and wishes. His character can be studied without associating or compromising with him. Character is inseparably connected with personage; in the sense here Spoken of, one cannot conceive of character existing in and of itself. The devil is a personage - a living spirit-being of unembodied status; and his dupes, both the unembodied and those in the flesh, for he has converts walking the earth, are no less separate entities and personal beings than he himself. This tenet is fundamental in the doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 90: August 23, 1928 I want to say that the crying evil of the age to - day is a lack of virtue. There is but one standard of morality in the Church of Christ. Ive have been taught, thousands of us who have been reared in this Church from our childhood days, that second only to murder is the sin of losing our virtue and I want to say to the fathers and to the mothers, and to the sons and daughters, in our Primary, in our Mutual Improvement Associations, in our Religion Classes, in the Relief Society and in all of our Priesthood Quorums - I want it understood that breaking the Word of Wisdom is one of the chief things in the hands of the adversary whereby he can lead boys and girls from virtue. Nearly always those who lose their virtue, first partake of those things that excite the passions within them. Partaking of tobacco and liquor is calculated to give them an appetite for those things which, if indulged in, are worse than death itself. There is no true Latter-day Saint who would not rather bury a son or a daughter than to have them lose their virtue - realizing that virtue is of more value than anything else in all the wide world.
