This unique, highly contextualized translation of the Laozi is based on the earliest known edition of the work, Text A of the Mawangdui Laozi, written before 202 BCE. No other editions are comparable to this text in its antiquity. Hongkyung Kim also incorporates the recent archaeological discovery of Laozi-related documents disentombed in 1993 in Guodian, seeing these documents as proto-materials for compilation of the Laozi and revealing clues for disentangling the work from complicated exegetical contentions. Kim makes extensive use of Chinese commentaries on the Laozi and also examines the classic Chinese texts closely associated with the formation of the work to illuminate the intellectual and historical context of Laozi's philosophy. Kim offers several original and thought-provoking arguments on the Laozi, including that the work was compiled during the Qin, which has traditionally been viewed as typical of Legalist states, and that the Laozi should be recognized as a syncretic text before being labeled a Daoist one.

"The Old Guard and the Avant-Garde: Modernism in Chicago, 1910-1940 brings together the history and the critical reaction to the new developments in art and design, places them in the context of conservative yet innovative Chicago at the turn of the century, and explores the tensions between tradition and innovation. The individual essays present the best in specialized current research, yet one can clearly understand the impact of modernism on the broader intellectual and cultural life of the city. I eagerly await as cohesive and thorough an analysis of the subject for New York."—David Sokol, University of Chicago "This is fresh and fascinating research about the ups and downs of modernism in Chicago, a city where art students reportedly once hung Matisse in effigy. Regional studies like this one broaden our understanding of how the art world has worked outside of New York and gives depth to a story we know too narrowly. Applause all the way around."—Wanda M. Corn, Stanford University

"This first biography of one of the leading conservative figures of the twentieth century traces the roots of John Bricker's ideology in his formative years as a boy growing up on an Ohio farm and examines his political career as governor, vice presidential candidate, and senator." "Bricker was exceptionally popular with Ohio voters, winning the governorship three consecutive times by increasingly larger majorities. After his 1944 campaign for the Republican presidential nomination fell short, he accepted the vice presidential slot on the ticket with Thomas E. Dewey. During two subsequent Senate terms, Bricker continued to develop his reputation as a national leader of the Republican Old Guard. His politics were so staunchly conservative that he was considered one of the nation's most consistent and dedicated opponents of the liberalism of the New Deal and Fair Deal administrations." "In the early 1950s, Bricker proposed a controversial amendment to the U.S. Constitution that addressed many conservative grievances against Roosevelt's and Truman's foreign policies. The long and acrimonious battle over the Bricker amendment, which was eventually defeated, split the Republican party and contributed to the end of Bricker's political career." "Based on Bricker's papers and several other manuscript collections, Davies's lively biography offers an insightful portrait of a politician who embodied conservative reaction to the sweeping changes of his time."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
