Mastering the Fundamentals of Finance: Building Skills and Intuition presents students with a uniquely structured approach to learning finance. Casting aside the traditional approach, the text emphasizes growth-focused valuation skills and the explicit development of intuition. The text features a unique modular design with twelve chapters supported by over thirty optional appendices. This unique structure allows students and instructors the flexibility to adjust their level of exposure to various topics, making the text appropriate for use at a wide range of universities. In Part I, students develop critical valuation skills with an emphasis on cash flow growth and the impact of inflation. Part II explores how cash flows are estimated for the three most popular investments categories: assets, debt, and equity. Part III discusses how to estimate risk-adjusted discount rates for the pricing of assets, debt, and equity. End-of-chapter problems, follow-up commentaries, color-coded multi-line mathematics, and high-quality cash flow timelines support learning and mastery. The revised first edition features a new version of the calculator app created by the author (available in app stores for free download), as well as a new appendix, 4-B, which covers using the Goal Seek tool to extend Microsoft Excel's capabilities. Mastering the Fundamentals of Finance is highly effective and suitable for any introductory finance course.

Exiles and Islanders describes Irish settlement in Prince Edward Island from 1763 to 1880. By tracing the history of these early settlers, Brendan O'Grady demolishes the myth that the Island's Irish settlers were largely refugees from the Great Potato Famine. Using a wide variety of sources, including folklore, newspaper reports, personal interviews, letters, shipping records, and historical data, O'Grady goes beyond mere statistics. We learn about settlers' hometowns in Ireland, why they left, when and how they came to Prince Edward Island, where they settled, and how they adapted to living in PEI. Over ten thousand Irish settled in PEI in the nineteenth century; by 1850 they comprised about a quarter of the Island's population. They were mainly pre-Famine immigrants and mostly Catholic. They came from all thirty-two counties of Ireland and settled in all sixty-seven townships of PEI. They took up farming, fishing, and rural occupations; raised large families; and retained their Irishness for several generations. Exiles and Islanders includes family names and places of origin that will be of particular interest to the Island's Irish descendants. An intriguing cultural history, the book provides new insight into the early settlers of Prince Edward Island.

Originally published in 1995. This book’s collection of key essays presents a coherent overview of touchstone statements and issues in the study of Anglo-American popular ballad traditions and suggests ways this panoramic view affords us a look at Euro-American scholarship’s questions, concerns and methods. The study of ballads in English began early in the eighteenth century with Joseph Addison’s discussions which marked the onset of an aesthetic and scholarly interest in popular traditions. Therefore the collection begins with him and then chronologically includes scholars whose views mark pivotal moments which taken together tell a story that does not emerge through an examination of the ballads themselves. The book addresses debates in tradition, orality, performance and community as well as national genealogies and connections to contexts. Each selected piece is pre-empted by an introductory section on its importance and relevance.
