Paul Heyse, one of the greatest of modern story-tellers, was born in Berlin on March 15, 1830. His father and grandfather were distinguished grammarians and teachers, while his mother was the daughter of a well-to-do Jewish family. At an early age Heyse entered the F riedriclz-wilhelm Gymnasium in his native city, from which he graduated in 1847 with a good record, except in mathematics. As a schoolboy he had written some lyric poetry showing the influence of Heine, Eichendorff, and Geibel, and had finished a tragedy called Don Juan de Padilla.
