Excerpt from L'arrabiata: And Other Tales The day had scarcely dawned. Over Vesuvius hung one broad grey stripe of mist; stretching across as far as Naples, and darkening all the small towns along the coast. The sea lay calm. But about the marina of the narrow creek, that lies beneath the Sorrento cliffs, fishermen and their wives were at work already, with giant cables drawing their boats to land, and the nets that had been cast the night before. Others were rigging their craft; trimming the sails, and fetching out oars and masts from the great grated vaults that have been built deep into the rocks for shelter to the tackle over night. Nowhere an idle hand; even the very aged, who had long given up going to sea, fell into the long chain of those who were hauling in the nets. Here and there, on some flat housetop, an old woman stood and span; or busied herself about her grandchildren, whom their mother had left to help her husband. Excerpt from L'arrabbiata: Edited for School Use With Material for Prose Composition A lively imagination, a wonderful mastery of poet ical forms, and a rare command of the language are the characteristics of Heyse's style; an appreciation and love of all that is beautiful, graceful, and noble in humanity and nature are the distinctive features of his view of life, as laid down in his various poetical works. Heyse, it is true, has written lyric poems which are full of deepest feeling and expression; he has composed numerous dramatic works, which have been favorably received by the German public; his larger romances (im Paradiese, Kinder der Welt) are remarkable produc tions of their kind; but neither as a dramatic author nor as a lyric poet has he won that fame and reputa tion which he has enjoyed for almost half a century. Heyse's best works those in which no German poet ever equalled or surpassed him, are his short novels, over seventy in number, some in verse, others in prose. In these little masterpieces, which as a rule are of a peculiar construction and have a highly poetical idea as a basis, the nobility of the form rivals the warmth of inner life and the fascinating art of the author's diction. No matter what subject he chooses, what side of human nature or con ict in human life he describes, we can not help feeling a deeper interest in his char acters and problems, as our hearts take a part in them.
