This cross-disciplinary book documents the key research challenges in the mathematical sciences and physics that could enable the economical development of novel biomedical imaging devices. It is hoped that the infusion of new insights from mathematical scientists and physicists will accelerate progress in imaging. Incorporating input from dozens of biomedical researchers who described what they perceived as key open problems of imaging that are amenable to attack by mathematical scientists and physicists, this book introduces the frontiers of biomedical imaging, especially the imaging of dynamic physiological functions, to the educated nonspecialist. Ten imaging modalities are covered, from the well-established (e.g., CAT scanning, MRI) to the more speculative (e.g., electrical and magnetic source imaging). For each modality, mathematics and physics research challenges are identified and a short list of suggested reading offered. Two additional chapters offer visions of the next generation of surgical and interventional techniques and of image processing. A final chapter provides an overview of mathematical issues that cut across the various modalities.

Background. Minimally invasive operations have transformed the field of surgery. Major operations are now performed through a series of 1cm incisions rather than through a large opening resulting in less pain, disability and fewer complications. Visualization of intra-abdominal structures is accomplished by endoscopes, 9mm diameter tubes containing relay optics. Application of advanced imaging techniques should enhance the surgeon's ability to perform operations more safely. Methods. Hyperspectral imaging has been adapted to endoscopic surgical instruments via a near infrared liquid crystal tunable filter and a back-illuminated, deep-depletion focal plane array with anti-etaloning process for extending sensitivity in the near infrared region. For the visible laparoscopic hyperspectral imaging, a visible low resolution liquid crystal tunable filter is used with a charged coupled device. Results. This imaging system has been used to visualize the peritoneal cavity in anesthetized pigs. Different inherent chromophores like Oxyhemoglobin, Deoxyhemoglobin, lipids and water, differentiate the intra-abdominal structures. Conclusion. Laparoscopic hyperspectral imaging has great potential for improving the surgeon's ability to "see through" the porta hepatis and visualize the common bile duct during cholecystectomy without infusing contrast agents or radiographs. Intraoperative imaging technologies have taken an ever-increasing role in the daily practice of neurosurgeons and the increasing attention and interest necessitated international interaction and collaboration. The Intraoperative Imaging Society was formed in 2007. This book brings together highlights from the second meeting of the Intraoperative Imaging Society, which took place in Istanbul-Turkey from June 14 to 17, 2009. Included within the contents of the book is an overview of the emergence and development of the intraoperative imaging technology as well as a glimpse on where the technology is heading. This is followed by in detail coverage of intraoperative MRI technology and sections on intraoperative CT and ultrasonography. There are also sections on multimodality integration, intraoperative robotics and other intraoperative technologies. We believe that this book will provide an up-to date and comprehensive general overview of the current intraoperative imaging technology as well as detailed discussions on individual techniques and clinical results.
