Excerpt from Preliminary Land Planning and Classification Report as Relates to the Public Domain Lands in the Big Horn Basin and Clark Fork of the Yellowstone (Wyoming and Montana): A Missouri River Basin Investigation Climatologically, the ba81n has extremes varying from year-around snow cover and heavy precipitation in the mountains to semi-desert conditions in the basin proper. Summers are relatively short and Winters long. Winters are rigorous but are usually less extreme than in the Great Plains east of the mountains. Vegetation varies from desert salt-brush at lower elevations to alpine associations, including conifer timber and mountain meadows in the high mountains. Public lands under the supervision of the Bureau of Land Management are located for the most part on the valley floor and foothill portion of the basin and as a group have a relatively sparse vegetative cover. These semi-arid lands, however, have an important place in the year-long livestock operational setup for basin operators, Since they provide a large part of the range livestock feed for winter, Spring and fall, as well as some for the summer.
