The relationship between magnetic fabric and petrofabric is complex and depends on various factors including the composition, concentration and grain size of mineral grains. Ongoing research in geological applications is paralleled by studies of the fundamental mineral magnetic phenomena involved. The papers in this book represent the current state of investigations in magnetic anisotropy studies as a discipline that integrates geological interpretations, mineral fabric development, technical advances and rock-magnetic properties.

European geologists, many from former Soviet bloc countries, present 14 studies they delivered at an October 2002 workshop in Freiberg, Germany on the physical geology of sub-volcanic systems. The subject has not been so thoroughly examined since 1970, they say, and could be of interest to igneous petrologists, volcanologists, structural geologists

Volcanic and Igneous Plumbing Systems: Understanding Magma Transport, Storage, and Evolution in the Earth's Crust synthesizes research from various geoscience disciplines to examine volcanic and igneous plumbing systems (VIPS) in-depth. VIPS comprise a network of magma transport and storage features in the Earth’s crust. These features include dykes, sills and larger magma bodies that form the pathway and supply system of magma beneath active volcanoes. Combining basic principles with world-class research and informative illustrations, this unique reference presents a holistic view of each topic covered, including magma transport, magma chambers, tectonics and volcanism. Addressing a variety of approaches to these topics, this book offers researchers and academics in the Earth Science fields, such as geophysics, volcanology and igneous petrology the information they need to apply the information to their own disciplines. Provides an easily understandable overview of current research on volcanic and igneous plumbing systems Includes full color illustrations to increase understanding Covers fundamental information needed to optimize comprehension Features a field example from world-class research in each chapter, including photographs and maps

"The Markagunt and Sevier gravity slides are gigantic landslides that resulted from gravitationally induced catastrophic failure of the southern flank of the Oligocene to Miocene Marysvale volcanic field. Each is nearly 100 km long with runouts over the former land surface >35 km; together they span 7000 km2 and rank among Earth's largest terrestrial landslides. Basal cataclastic layers, injectites, pseudotachylyte, deformed clasts, and a variety of kinematic indicators demonstrate catastrophic emplacement, which was preceded by slow gravitational spreading of the volcanic field. This volume offers a history of their discovery, our current understanding of the gravity slides, and a guide to particularly instructive exposures for which the authors document their conclusions about the size, age, and significant structural features of these newly discovered features"--
