The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the PBR in providing auxiliary torque to a veneer bolt. Specific goals were to: Measure the torque provided by the PRB in peeling veneer of different species and thickness. These were Douglas-fir and red oak, 1/32 inch and 1/10 inch each; and white fir, 1/8 inch and 3/16 inch. Evaluate the quality of veneer peeled using the PBR by examining uniformity of thickness, surface smoothness, and surface appearance. Evaluate roller coating material for friction characteristics, wear, and compatibility with wood. Develop optimum control criteria for the PBR to provide detection and correction for roller slip and deflection of the log.

Veneer log spin-out has been a continuing problem in the plywood industry, contributing to increased timber consumption and higher costs. To alleviate this problem, a laboratory prototype powered back-up roll (PBR) was designed and built by the Forest Products Laboratory. Because of satisfactory laboratory performance, a commercial model of the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) PBR was installed in Boise Cascade's Yakima plywood plant. Operating under actual plant conditions, the PBR has significantly reduced spin-outs. It has not interferred with the normal veneer peeling operation, and has been well received by plant personnel. The payback period is estimated as less than 1 year. (Author).

In 1982, 175 softwood plywood plants operated in the United States with a combined production capacity of nearly 23.1 billion square feet (ft2 ) (3/8-in. basis) per year, 60 percent greater than in 1965. The West was the region with largest capacity in 1982--12.5 billion ft2. The South had 10.5 billion ft2 and the North less than half a billion ft2 . Approximately 1.1 billion cubic feet (roundwood equivalent) of peeler logs were consumed in 1982 to produce 15.1 billion ft2 of softwood plywood. Domestic softwood plywood consumption in 1982 was 14.6 billion ft2, with residential construction accounting for half.
