The exuberant art of Gustave Doré (1832-83) has influenced romantics and realists around the world. A self-taught child prodigy who met with early and resounding success, Doré ranks among the most prolific and popular illustrators of all time. Known as "the master of the fantastic," he excelled in conveying dramatic action in memorable settings. This original collection assembles for the first time Doré's best work depicting knights and their adventures. It features eighty-six captivating scenes of battles, damsels, dragons, and other images from the Age of Chivalry. Advances in science and technology introduced irrevocable changes to the society of Doré and his contemporaries and aroused a nostalgia for simpler times. The moral certitude and stability embodied in Arthurian myths and other medieval romances proved as appealing to Victorians as they do to modern audiences. This collection features highlights from eight volumes that span more than two decades of Doré's career, including scenes from Tennyson's Idylls of the King. Other sources include Don Quixote, Orlando Furioso, Rabelais' The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel, and Michaud's History of the Crusades.

In these days of sensationalism, the images of the past often seem shadowy and rather vague. This work explores a period in American art and culture when both were infused with a strong sense of righteousness and the certainty that the artist must celebrate nature and the deity. The chapter headings--from "Seeing" to "Virtue," "Chivalry" to "Christendom"--echo the ideas expressed in the paintings, contrasting with what art critic Cooper sees as a cultural crisis in our times. Unfortunately, this work comes across as preachy and sentimental, perhaps because of the zealous morality of the time it examines. Still, the works of art, gathered from a wide variety of holdings, are an excellent record of a splendid age of landscape, and Cooper should be commended for preserving and evaluating these important records of a past era. One could only wish that the sense of moral judgment did not overwhelm the critical eye. Recommended for academic libraries and all libraries focusing on American art history. 58 colour & 2 b/w illustrations

Full color edition. Originally written for younger readers as an introduction to the world of the Italian Renaissance, this classic work takes the reader on an exciting personal tour of some of the greatest artists of that time period. Much more than just a dry history of who painted what, Steedman's book portrays each artist in personal terms, providing details of their lives, loves, highlights and low points. The period of Italian Renaissance painting started around the late thirteenth century and flourished until the sixteenth, covering the periods scholars now call the Proto-Renaissance (1300-1400), the Early Renaissance (1400-1475), the High Renaissance (1475-1525), and Mannerism (1525-1600). Drawing much of her material from the classic Lives of the Painters, by Giorgio Vasari, Steedman gives readers young and old a concise and enthralling overview of Italian Renaissance painters and discusses their impact upon society and their enduring cultural legacy. As Steedman writes in her introduction:"Then came the time which is called 'The Renaissance,' a word which means being born again, or a new awakening, when men began to draw real pictures of real things and fill the world with images of beauty. Now it is the stories of the men of that time, who put new life into Art, that I am going to tell you-men who learned, step by step, to paint the most beautiful pictures that the world possesses." The artists discussed include Giotto, Fra Angelico, Masaccio, Fra Filippo Lippi, Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Filippino Lippi, Pietro Perugino, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Andrea del Sarto, Giovanni Bellini, Vittore Carpaccio, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, and Paul Veronese. This edition has been completely reformatted to modern standards and contains all the original illustrations. Cover image: Portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni (1488) by Domenico Ghirlandaio. The full color edition contains all 16 original color plates, hand restored using the latest digital techniques, in addition to the original grayscale illustrations.
