This short book provides a sketch of the important, but underrated book written by 19th-century Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, The Philosophy of Freedom. The purpose of Key to Life is to help new readers make sense of the essential ideas of Steiner's book and prepare them for working through the detailed account itself. Grasping the key ideas should inspire readers to dive into the original at a later time and read it without encountering major obstacles. While Steiner's work delves into the age-old question of freedom of will, his approach to the experiential exploration of the nature of thinking is unique. A human act can only meaningfully be called free if the person acting is fully conscious of the reasons for his/her action. This means that the degree of freedom of the act is determined by the degree of freedom of the thinking preceding the act. But what is thinking? Iddo Oberski's book explains how Steiner sees thinking as a manifestation in us of a natural phenomenon, and as such, thinking should be understood as a real experience of the spiritual world. Steiner's philosophy sparked a movement called Anthroposophy, which seeks to develop a path to knowledge that runs in between science and mysticism. First-time author Iddo Oberski is originally from Amsterdam, Netherlands. He is now a lecturer at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, Scotland. Throughout his studies in neurobiology, primatology and education, he always thought that a real knowledge of the human being was missing. In Steiner's book, he felt he finally got some answers. Humility, or holding power loosely for the sake of others, is sorely lacking in today’s world. Without it, many people fail to develop their true leadership potential and miss out on genuine fulfillment in their lives and their relationships. Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership shows how the virtue of humility can turn your strengths into true greatness in all areas of life. Through the lessons of history, business, and the social sciences, author John Dickson shows that humility is not low self-esteem, groveling, or losing our distinct gifts. Instead, humility both recognizes our inherent worth and seeks to use whatever power we have at our disposal on behalf of others. Some of the world’s most inspiring and influential players have been people of immense humility. The more we learn about humility, the more we understand how essential it is to a satisfying career and personal life. By embracing this virtue, we will transform for good the unique contributions we each make to the world.

“Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand.” —Stevie Wonder, “Sir Duke” In 2003, young professor Ferentz LaFargue traveled to Paris, where his fiancée, Tricia, declared she wasn’t happy with their relationship, ending what he thought was a wonderful engagement. After days of “craying”—“that sorrow-laden blend of crying and praying delivered in perfect pitch by those in mourning”—Ferentz happened upon Stevie Wonder’s 1976 classic double album Songs in the Key of Life. Listening to it anew was a healing, spiritual trip down memory lane, helping him to come to terms with his breakup and reflect on how songs in general have been linked to his life. In this book, Ferentz invites us to get cozy and listen as he hits PLAY on meaningful tracks from Wonder and others, including Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, LL Cool J, Beenie Man, Sheryl Crow, Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, and Black Sabbath. He recalls: How the fusion of rock and rap in the breakthrough Run-D.M.C./Aerosmith video “Walk This Way” helped to change an adolescent Ferentz from outcast to authority figure How Michael Jackson’s Thriller brought back a traumatic childhood experience How Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks” speaks to the tension between his Christian beliefs and his need to rip it up in clubs as a hip-hop head In the tradition of Nick Hornby’s Songbook¸ these words paint a portrait of a life framed by sounds, allowing all of us to think about what songs have been key in our own lives.
