Larry Runyon has lived a life that Horatio Alger would be proud of. Consider this: Larry contracted polio at age two and a half; as part of his therapy, he walked several miles each day and soon discovered golf and became a sensation, traveling the country playing in junior golf tournaments; in his teens he discovered a love for flying and crop dusting; at age 18 he married his high school sweetheart; he turned pro and became a greens keeper at the same course in Coffeeville, Kansas; he began a journey that would take him to the highest echelons of golf course maintenance and make his name (as well as his trademark crew cut) known wherever superintendents gather; along the way he encountered some rather interesting individuals in country clubs, pubs, race tracks and industry. While Larry was, and is, an excellent golfer, he is best known for his innovations in course maintenance, particularly his work in replacing dangerous chemicals with harmless biological agents. Always entertaining and sometimes hilarious, this is his story. As someone once said, “You burr headed bastard, it’s all your fault!” Larry couldn’t agree more.

Around 1970, the peaceful country of Kampuchea (now Cambodia) gradually began to change by the force of political power and corruption. At the same time, many parts of the world became influenced by the Communist system. The Communist party called the Red Khmer (also known as the Khmer Rouge) began to form. They spent years in the jungle recruiting and brainwashing anyone who joined. They believed they could change the country for the better by taking over the current government and changing everything to a system where everyone could become equal. They spent years fighting and claiming each region of the country until they successfully took over the entire country. Their main purpose was to eliminate anyone who’d caused the corruption and those who’d embraced the political powers. No one knew their main purpose until they began to execute their scheme. Tragically, they didn’t just eliminate their initial targets. They went far beyond their original plans, and millions of innocent civilians also became their victims. My family lived through this gruesome and horrifying ordeal, and this book is our story of how we all managed to survive the Red Khmer and remain together.

The Golf Courses of Lawsonia The Links Opened for play in May, 1930, the Links course remains unique to date. Designed by William Langford, the course is arranged in the Scottish golf links tradition. Elevated greens, unusually severe bunkers, and open rolling terrain still create great difficulty. According to legend, a boxcar is buried beneath the seventh green providing its extraordinary elevation. Year after year, decade after decade, the Links layout has essentially reserved a spot on lists of the nation's top 100 public courses in national golf publications. The Woodlands Opened in 1983 as a beautiful, wooded 9-hole course designed by Rocky Roquemore. The holes meander through maples, pines and aspens. Eight years later the second nine was opened to complement the original nine to seamlessly form the 6618-yard Woodlands course. Is there a Spirit of Lawsonia? The author looks at the courses of Lawsonia through the eyes of a weekend player, while experiencing personal and spiritual development after a long absence from the golf course where he learned to play the game.
