During 1924, before his last address in September, Rudolf Steiner gave over eighty lectures on the subject of karma to members of the Anthroposophical Society. These profoundly esoteric commentaries examine the underlying laws of reincarnation and karma, and explore in detail the incarnations of specific historical figures. In Rudolf Steiner’s words, the study of karma is ‘... a matter of penetrating into the most profound mysteries of existence, for within the sphere of karma and the course it takes lie those processes which are the basis of the other phenomena of world existence...’ In this eighth and final volume of the series, Rudolf Steiner offers insights on a variety of subjects, including Cosmic Christianity, the Michael impulse, the Arthur and Grail streams of wisdom, as well as the individualities of Gregory VII, Haeckel, Swedenborg, Loyola, Haroun al Raschid, Byron, Voltaire and others.

These first three lectures provide an important foundation for all that follows. What Steiner offers is actually a kind of Goethean phenomenology of karma. Two kinds of fundamentally different human encounters are read as archetypal phenomena, Urphänomene in the sense of Goethe's science, which are transparent in turn to vast cosmic perspectives: the Moon as the portal of the past, the portal revealing cosmic necessity leading us together; and the Sun as the portal of the future, where we can act in freedom. Steiner also underscores the importance of the Christmas Conference, and issues a resounding call for anthroposophical life and activity. Because the German original is available only in editions prior to 1970, I have appended it to the volume.

At the end of his life, Rudolf Steiner took up the task that was his special destiny: to bring to the West a knowledge of reincarnation and karma. To do this, he gave over eighty lectures in 1924 in which he explicitly and concretely revealed the destinies of various individuals from one life to the next in order to show how the general laws of karma operate in individual cases. He also revealed many details of the karmic streams of the members of the Anthroposophical Society. These volumes constitute an immeasurable contribution to the understanding of reincarnation and karma, and the tasks of the Anthroposophical Society in connection with the Archangel Michael.

How often do we find ourselves in relationships that echo the past, that recapitulate familiar but destructive patterns? How often have we tried to analyze an unhealthy or unhappy relationship from a psychological perspective, only to find that this kind of interpretation doesn't "feel" right? Martin Schulman suggests that we can reach a deeper and more constructive understanding if we search out the karmic layers in our relationships - those attitudes, behaviors and beliefs which are residue from past lifetimes, and which stand in the way of our achieving harmony and balance, the prerequisites for enduring relationships using a karmic lens. He compares every possible combination of the major aspects, showing the reader how one facet of personality (represented by a planet ) compares to planets in your partner's chart. Where are the points of stress in your relationship karmically, we can grow both spiritually and emotionally.

"After Rudolf Steiner's death, she remained filled with the great impulses of the Christmas Foundation Meeting--impulses, hopes, also anxieties on behalf of mankind, which he had shared with her in many an intimate conversation" --George Adams on Ita Wegman Following the death of Rudolf Steiner in 1925, Ita Wegman--one of his closest esoteric students--began to publish regular letters to the members of the Anthroposophical Society. As Steiner's had done, her letters were appended with "leading thoughts" (guiding principles). Esoteric Studies collects many of those "letters to friends," along with various articles, reports, and addresses by Ita Wegman on subjects such as the Christmas Foundation Conference, the Goetheanum building, and the festival of Michaelmas. Featuring an informative foreword by Crispian Villeneuve and a commemorative study by George Adams, this book provides a fine introduction to the work of Ita Wegman, as well as a rousing call for courage and wakefulness in the spirit of the Archangel Michael "May all those who have the strength and courage, not only to bring the Michael-thought to manifestation in their souls but to make it living in their deeds, become true servants of Michael and bring about his victory, and thus lead mankind over the great crisis with which it is now confronted." --Ita Wegman
