Is God for real? Is there any meaning to life? These are the questions that urged a nine-year-old to start a quest that has lasted over sixty-nine years. The journey goes from coast to coast and from border to border. The events run the gamut of the last half of the previous century: racial prejudice, school integration, Vietnam debates, and the place of Christianity in our sociopolitical society. The accounts describe facing violence without fear, and finding solutions to complex problems. What is it like to raise a family in a parsonage? Raising a family anywhere is a challenge and a joy. Whether in a parsonage or neighborhood household, having a faith to live by is a resource that makes the difference. What is different about Journey to God? The approach is to use the experiences in our everyday life together and in language anyone can understand. One does not have to be highly educated or have special spiritual experiences to discover how the divine works in todays society. Journey to God demonstrates how an everyday person with everyday abilities can experience a presence today that is usually reserved for the days of the Bible. While the characters in the Bible seem bigger than life, one does not have to be biggerone only has to be alive to experience the same sense of the divine most assume exists only in the past.

"In God's House! Beautiful! Let's Go!, Jane Ann Derr has told us more than we have a right to ask. She has let us into the world of her marriage, her family, her work, her loss, her fears, and her happiness. She has let us into her faith in God and her devotion to Jesus Christ. She has let us into her husband's illness and death, and into the grief and resolve of her life as the one who survived. But her real interest is what she has seen of the goodness and mercy of God." -Stephen E. Broyles, author of The Wind that Destroys and Heals. "I highly recommend this book, especially for those who are called upon to pass through this valley of shadows." -Neil R. Lightfoot, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Abilene Christian University "For Harold and Jane Ann, the journey has been exceedingly fruitful. I predict that as you read this book, you will cry, you will laugh, and you will be encouraged. At least, that's what happened when I read it." -Gary Chapman, author of The Five Love Languages and Love as a Way of Life. Jane Ann Derr is also the author of Trailblazing with God, describing her family's missionary experiences in Ghana, West Africa. She lives in Georgia. You may write her at [email protected]. David the king of ancient Israel, reflects in his Psalm writing, Psalm 8:4, "Who is man that thou are mindful of him." His is recognizing that the God of all creation had been a spiritual force in his life, sustaining him in battle and in his battle of life. God showed mercy to David and David was considering his position before God. The question is why? Why does God embrace and direct an individual's life? How does God entwine His will in a human life and yet allow the individual to have freedom of choice? Reflecting on my life and how it affected the lives of my family, are sketched out in this book, revealing the very involvement of an eternal God throughout our life time, yet allowing us to choose our life's direction. Solomon's recorded words in Ecclesiastes 3:2, challenges us to make wise choices during the time between the "The cradle and the grave." Patience is a factor that is exercised by God as He watches over us. There are specific talents or gifts that are given to each of us and we should be mindful of how God would want us to use them to His glory. As I tried to do the will of the Lord in my life, I was constantly aware that any decision I made would eventually affect a wife and children with which I might be blessed. Decisions, such as taking a family to one of the most remote islands in the world, and live among people of a stone age culture, some that were still practicing cannibalism, was a monumental, soul searching decision. It is a challenge to continue to follow the Lord and experience His blessings.

This is a book about spirituality, more specifically, the spiritual journey. Before beginning any journey or trip--spiritual or otherwise--we experience a state of order. Then comes the call to journey, to travel, to take a trip, to walk, to pilgrimage, to hit the road, etc. The call to begin a journey may come from an urge within us; it may be an invitation from a spouse or a friend to fly somewhere; it may be as simple as taking the dog for a walk in the neighborhood, even taking different streets! The call disrupts our ordered lives. We prepare for our excursion. We enter into the stage of chaos when we take the journey; also, we enter into the process of transformation. By the time we get home, we will be transformed. These are the steps of the spiritual journey into God: order, hearing the call to journey, answering the call with preparation, entering the chaos of the journey, and being and coming home transformed. Ninety-seven reflections are presented in this book in seven chapters devoted to journey; road; path; route, highway, gateway; walk; way; and more.

The Journey God Chose is told by a man who at an early age had a heart that yearned after God. In the process of surrendering his life to Christ, he came to realize the truth contained in Proverb 16:9 New International Readers VersionIn your heart you plan your life. But the Lord decides where your steps will take you. He realized that each day of his life journey was ordered not by him but by his Heavenly Father. Al Brocks story is intensely personal. It is an open and honest look at his struggles from early childhood with feelings of jealousy, inadequacy, and inferiority as he became aware of physical limitations not shared by his identical twin brother. As well, he struggled with feelings of lack of acceptance by his father, again because of his limitations. Als brother, Pete, was always chosen first to be on athletic teams while Al was chosen last. Pete became the star quarterback of the high school football team while Al himself served as the teams water boy. He grew up in an environment of fear because of his fathers alcoholism and violent rages when intoxicated. And then his father was gone when Al was only nine years of age, succumbing to the ravages of his drinking. This left the family of mother and four children to cope with no ready source of money during the years of the Great Depression. Als life verse could be thought of as Romans 8:28 (NIRV): We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him. He appointed them to be saved in keeping with his purpose. This verse is a thread running throughout the story of his life. It is evident from childhood on as the family overcame the challenges of going forward without the father. Continued evidence is seen throughoutfrom his military service during WWII, through his calling to the ministry and his education, in the answer to prayer that provided his wife, and on into his later years. Every life that came in contact with Al Brocks was met with a commitment by him to closeness and lasting friendship. God used that to bring those he and Bunny met closer in their desire for the Lord. The churches he served grew both in membership and spiritually. A monumental change occurred for Al with the stirring of the Holy Spirit for a full surrender of his life. God gave him a life-changing experience of memory for repressed events with subsequent healing of past hurts done to him, and by him to others. The result was a Baptism of the Holy Spirit into the fullness and freshness of a new spiritual calling and personal walk with God. The lives of those he came in contact with were changed to an even greater degree with the fullness of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. This became a priority in churches he served and in special groups of people. The Spirit of the Lord was seen to change individual lives as well as the collective life of the churches he and Bunny were called to serve. Al Brock is one of the few men I have come in contact with who has turned sorrow and disappointment into a stepping stone to knowing God in a richer and deeper walk and the Holy Spirits control. Bunny faithfully served along with him in every calling that they had together. His children rise and call him blessed. So do the many close friends he and Bunny made during the years that they served in the ministry. It was a pleasure for me and my wife, Diane, to come to know him and his loving wife through helping to put his life story into words on paper. Hopefully lives will continue to be changed by those who read these words, even though you may not have the joy of being in contact with him through personal relationship or ministry.

After thirty-two years of complete silence, Robert Newmiller feels compelled to share his early church life and the result of an ensuing struggle that played out within the deepest regions of his heart and mind. Although he once trembled at the thought of speaking of the past, he now sees that the hand of God's providence was at work within the darkest of circumstances, and he now understands that his brokenness and tears served a greater purpose. Join Newmiller as he shares his past in Molested in God's House. 'This is the poignant story of the journey of a soul. A soul born to trust, damaged by betrayal, tormented by the loss of faith, then emergent with God's love renewed. Mr. Newmiller courageously shares the lifelong ramifications of sexual abuse. He challenges us as a society to stop this evil and protect our children. He espouses the power of God in accepting and granting forgiveness and then reintegrating love, hope, trust and faith into his life and the life of his family.' Susan Pronchik, guidance counselor 'Molested in God's House is a journey of faith that starts out in the wide-eyed wonder of a child, takes us through the sequences of the most evil depravity that life can mete out to one person, and comes full circle to a living faith restored to a new and greater dimension.' Karen Tomlinson, founder, Step by Step Learning Center 'This book is a roadmap of sorts that speaks to the hearts of all fallen Christians who believe incorrectly that they have fallen too far from our Creator's love to find their way home. It proclaims: You are welcome again in your heavenly Father's house!' Jim Femino, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter
