Sloan has undertaken to fill a long-standing gap in the study of journalism history. He has compiled a comprehensive annotated bibliography of works pertaining to United States journalism history from colonial to contemporary times. Some 2,600 separate entries provide information on dissertations, articles, monographs, books and reference materials published between 1810 and 1988. . . . Overall this is a useful, stimulating volume that pulls together a diverse collection of materials. It should enrich the teaching and writing of journalism history. American Journalism The history of the American news media has been a popular subject with journalists, popular writers, and historians since the early years of the Republic, and it continues to attract widespread interest. Until now, however, no complete bibliography of these historical materials has been available. This comprehensive work provides access to the existing literature on all types of journalism from newspapers to television. In his introduction, Sloan reviews the different approaches to journalism history that have characterized writing in the field. The bibliography is divided by historical period and general theme into 16 sections. Carefully annotated, it presents concise summaries and bibliographic information for some 2,600 articles, books, research guides, and reference works published between 1810 and 1988. More than 100 journals are included. Cross-referencing and a detailed index will help the reader locate materials on specific topics as well as those with wider application. An invaluable tool for historians and other scholars engaged in research, this book will also serve as a useful reference for courses in mass communications and the history of journalism.

The Literature of Journalism was first published in 1959.This is a general, descriptive bibliography of literature pertaining to journalism in its broadest sense, including not only the traditional media of newspapers and magazines but also radio and television journalism and the related fields of advertising and public relations. The more than 3100 entries are arranged in 13 major categories, with a number of subdivisions within many of the categories. A comprehensive index contains both subject and author entries. In selecting titles for inclusion in the bibliography, Professor Price has been guided to a certain degree by the availability of the works. Most of the books and periodicals listed may be found in a moderately large library. The boundaries of selection were otherwise more flexible than rigid, with one exception -- all of the entries are English-language publications. The basis of the over-all selection is predominantly historical and biographical, with more than two-fifths of all the titles falling in these two categories. The largest single classification is that of biographies and autobiographies of journalists and books about men closely connected with journalism. Other extensive categories are those which consist of general journalistic and individual newspaper history, appraisals of the press, and legal aspects of the press. Several hundred titles relate to British journalism. Well over 100 other titles concern other areas of foreign journalism. The vast majority of the entries are for 20th-century publications, but there are a few 18th- and 19th-century titles. With very few exceptions, the entries are confined to published books in all sections except the one that lists periodicals.

An Annotated Journalism Bibliography was first published in 1970.This bibliography provides information about important books in journalism which have appeared since the publication of Warren C. Price s The Literature of Journalism: An Annotated Bibliography by the University of Minnesota Press in 1959. Several thousand titles are included in the present volume, almost as many as in the earlier volume (which covered a much longer period), a fact that points to the great growth of the mass media in 1958-1968, the development of the broadcast media, the new emphasis placed on communication research, and the increasingly significant relation of the mass media to the government. The selection of titles reflects emphasis on American journalism, but many titles concerned with the press of Great Britain and other foreign countries also are included. Numerous biographies are listed, and among other general categories of listings are narratives of journalists at work and anthologies of journalistic writing, ethical and legal appraisals of the mass media, techniques of journalism, journalism education and vocational guidance, magazines, periodicals of the press, public opinion and propaganda, radio and television, foreign press and international communication facilities, and bibliographies and directories. Annotations are provided for almost all titles. Although the listing in the 1959 volume was by categories, this supplement is alphabetical, with an extensive categorical listing provided in the index."
