Excerpt from Journal of the College of Engineering, Imperial University of Tokyo, Vol. 5: May 27th, 1910 The problem in them is, for simplicity sake, limited to the vertical vibrations of hull, that is, the lateral vibrations about a horizontal plane, (but of course similar reasoning applies to the horizontal vibrations for a first approximation, although a ship is generally devoid of symmetry in this latter case). On this understanding, I consider a ship as a tree-free bar symmetrical about the centre line plane and treat her as subjected to forced vibrations under the influence of unbalanced forces of engines (both main and auxiliary) and propellers, but not taking, account of wave effects of the surrounding water.
