The pork required to be soaked to remove the salt, boiled, bones removed, and then it had to be packed carefully in canvas bags made for the purpose; the pemmican required but to be allotted; bread, tea, sugar, tobacco, had to be weighed out carefully and put up neatly in canvas bags; fat for fuel, the refuse of the cooks, which they had been carefully preserving as a perquisite, and very inferior stuff for most part, had to be melted down and. Poured into canvas bags, each of seven to contain forty pounds; and, what would be necessary and was still more difficult, arrangements had to be made on board ship for leaving depots or cachés of provisions for the return of the advancing parties.
