This brief journal, written for the author's wife and father, describes a three- week trip from Rochester, New York to southern Michigan by way of the Great Lakes. Swan's business seems to have been the manufacture of soda water, and he visited some drug stores in Detroit in order to promote his wares. After a brief stop in Ypsilanti, he spent the weekend in Ann Arbor, where he attended church. He then took a stage for Jackson, Marshall and the Genesee Prairies (near Kalamazoo), where he visited a sister and brother. In Michigan he also stopped at Summerville, Niles, La Porte Prairie, White Pidgeon Prairie, Clinton, and Saline. Swan writes enthusiastically about the prairies' wildflowers and abundant natural beauty, and describes life aboard Great Lakes steamers in some detail. He also voices candid opinions about women, food, and the discomforts of travel.

From the arrival of the first steamship to Lake Michigan in 1821 through the turbulent booms and busts of more than 130 years, passenger steamers of this bygone era provided an essential link for immigrants, excursionists, businesspeople and leisure travelers. On offer were dining, dancing, day trips and luxurious shipboard settings, but mishaps like storms, fires and shipwrecks were a persistent danger to passengers and crew alike. Through fascinating tales and splendid images, Lost Passenger Steamships of Lake Michigan presents the romantic and sometimes dangerous story of a vanished industry that once connected communities all long Lake Michigan's shores.

Excerpt from Documents Accompanying the Journal of the Senate of the State of Michigan, at the Annual Session of 1841, Vol. 1 This resource, upon which so much expectation was found ed, seems too likely, for present purposes, in a great measure, to fail us. The overthrow of the general currency of the na tion, which has produced so much distress, and the continuing process by which, what little remains available, seems rapidly passing out of the state. Have already prostrated all uniform standard of value; and the ruinous diminution in the prices of agricultural products, have rendered all real estate of little present worth. School lands, therefore, are no longer sought after by purchasers; and, hitherto. In times of so great ressure and general distress, the legislature have found it di 'cult to resist applications for relief, and delay of payment on the part of those who have heretofore purchased these lands.
