One of the greatest depictions of God’s providence in Scripture is the historical narrative of Joseph, who was sold into slavery, and worked under Potiphar, the chief steward of Pharaoh. Within the course of this narrative, while Joseph is in his house, Potiphar’s wife comes to him many times to lure him off to sin in one of the most bold and forthright temptations to be recorded anywhere in the Bible. She had longing, wandering eyes and comes to tempt him, assaulting him, “day by day,” constantly, and audaciously. Joseph’s reaction to this wicked assault is an instant refusal to the temptation. “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Gen. 39:9). What biblical directives can be found in this amazing statement of holiness and godliness? From this one text McMahon meticulously explains how Joseph’s victory over temptation against Potiphar’s wife can be used by the believer today for their own victory to the glory of Jesus Christ. Christians need to be prepared to deal with temptation in a manner in which they will be victorious in the power of Christ’s Spirit. But they can only do this if they understand what Joseph understood in regards to God, temptation and the heinous nature of sin. He covers such topics as: the great evil of sin, the relationship between sin and God’s holiness, how to live faithfully before God’s omniscience and omnipresence, the nature and character of temptation, what it means to resist temptations, how holy fear aids the Christian in light of temptation, what the Spirit works in a Christian motioning them to holiness, how one can cultivate a sensitivity to the Spirit’s work, the inconsistency in sinning against God, how usefulness in God’s kingdom is linked to holiness, the power of Christ’s Gospel as the full remedy to temptation and sin, as well as a number of other important considerations. (He also includes a study on the “hedge of protection” that is mentioned in Job 1:10 as an appendix to the work.) This book faithfully explains and applies Genesis 39:9 demonstrating Joseph’s godly resolve and the unreasonableness of sinning against God. Here you will find what steps you can take, following devout Joseph, to keep yourself from falling into sin through the craftiness of temptation, that you may bring the most glory to Jesus Christ in your walk before God.

Diamonds, gold, and precious pearls don't lie on the earth's surface. We have to search for them. And so it is with the precious gems of the Bible. We have to dig for them. They have been hidden from the eyes those who fail to "search the Scriptures." The life of Joseph in particular is filled with enigmatic meaning and biblical types that are easily missed by a superficial reading of the wonderful story. From his initial strange dreams, to the continual attempts to seduce him by Potiphar's unfaithful wife, to being thrown in jail as an accused sexual predator, to his divinely assisted interpretations of the bizarre dreams of the butler, the baker, and Pharaoh-all carry amazing truths that will comfort, encourage, and thrill the godly soul. And how we need comfort, because almost every day has a fresh curveball-the unexpected job loss, bills that come from nowhere, sickness, the neighbor's barking dog, and the car that breaks down. It seems that the whole world has conspired to make our short life miserable. And it certainly would be, if we missed the great lessons from a young man whose life was as colorful as his famous coat.

The life of Joseph provides several life lessons to be applied to our life's journey. For me, the account of Joseph is probably the closest experience to compare with my life. I believe as you read this book, you will find this to be the case in your life as well. I find it very interesting that prior to any written form of instructions or commandments, Joseph knew what it meant to conduct his affairs in a way that I consider to be supernatural. Although he found himself in very difficult situations, Joseph possessed an ability to find the solution to his problems by listening to voice of God through his dreams and the dreams of others. As believers, we recognize Joseph's experiences as divine favor. We recognize and acknowledge Joseph's experiences to be as being part of the unmerited favor and grace of God. It is obvious that Joseph recognized and effectively walked in this divine favor by exercising his trust in God to fulfill His promises. Although the Holy Spirit did not indwell man at the time of Joseph's era, the gift to interpret dreams performed the same operational affect as one of the gifts of the Spirit given to the believer today. I believe that gift to be the word of wisdom. Today, believers can operate in this gift when interpreting dreams and visions. There are several examples in Scripture before and after the resurrection of Messiah where dreams and visions were interpreted before fulfillment. In the late Dr. Lester Sumrall's book, The Gifts and Ministries of the Holy Spirit, he identifies several great men of God in the Old Testament who exercised the gift of the word of wisdom. It was Dr. Sumrall who held the position that several of the prophets of old were endowed with the gift of a word of wisdom. Dr. Sumrall made the following statement about Joseph, "The Holy Spirit can convey the word of wisdom in many ways. To Joseph it was the interpreting of a dream of the future. When Joseph was seventeen years old, God showed him the course of his whole life the fact that he would be a great leader and how even his own brothers would bow down before him." "And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, Behold, I have dreamed another dream; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars bowed down to me. And he told it to his father, and to his brothers: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, what is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down ourselves to you to the earth?" (Genesis 37:9""10, KJV). I cannot claim that Joseph's parents did not believe his dream, but it does appear they found his dream difficult to accept. It is interesting to note that the parents knew the interpretation of the dream without Joseph explaining it to them. This tells me that this practice of lessoning and interpreting one's dreams was indeed the practice of children of Israel. As time passed, Joseph's was fulfilled. The Scripture declares that God does not change. I believe that He has not changed this method of communication. Although there are different ways that God speaks to His children (primarily through His written word), the method of dreams and the interpretation of dream often provides what I like to describe as the Joseph effect.

What aspect of your character attracts God's anointing in your life? Joseph in the bible attracted God's anointing and favour by faith whilst he was in Egypt because he was blessed. Joseph was faced with a life- and -death situation when he clashed with evil forces in Egypt. He was faced with two choices. One was to succumb to sin and fall into the adversary's trap and delay God's plan; the other to resist and remain righteous and keep his integrity. In this book you will discover: ● The significance of the pit as the precursor to character building. ● Why Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt. ● A revelation of God's power and sovereignty. ● The outcome of Joseph's encounter with Portipher's wife. ● The reason why Joseph's ascension to power was fast track. ● The reason why Jacob and his entire household migrated and settled in Egypt

This book has been written about Joseph the son of Jacob. He had had two dreams about his family members bowing to him, and those dreams had made them very angry with him. In fact, they hated him so much that they actually tried to get rid of him. They sold him to some merchants going to Egypt. Then, an Egyptian captain bought him out of the local slave market and brought him into his household. Because the Lord was with him, Joseph excelled everywhere he went and in everything that he did. But that did not keep him from getting into a lot of trouble. He ended up in prison when the Egyptian captain's wife had falsely claimed that he had tried to force himself on her. Once he was in prison, he excelled again. But that did not keep him from spending a lengthy time there. Joseph would eventually get out of prison and rise to be the number two man in all of Egypt. But his journey was filled with difficulties and setbacks. Joseph is an excellent example of right behavior in all circumstances. He did well even when things turned against him because of his high personal standards and integrity. For many of his early years in Egypt, he may not have felt like the Lord was in complete control of his circumstances. But by the time that he had reached his destiny, he understood the Lord's workings in his life. This book discusses the details of Joseph's life in Egypt. It explains how he would have gotten saved. It explains why God fashions some vessels for honor and others for dishonor. It presents an analogy of the Egyptian captain purchasing Joseph out of the slave market and Jesus purchasing a lost sinner out of the sin market. Lastly, it discusses different aspects of forgiveness.

TWO GREAT BOOKS IN ONE! JOSEPH It is not easy to put God first. Pressures come in life; criticisms to misunderstandings arise. Disillusion can very easily set in. To keep going for God is a more difficult task than slipping into mediocrity and ‘laidback’ Christian commitment. This book on the life of Joseph is aimed at proving that you can go on for God, no matter what age you are. Seventeen? See Joseph go on for God in spite of jealousy at home. Twenty-eight? See Joseph suffer in prison for moral purity. Thirty? Study Joseph as Prime Minister still going on for God. Forty-four? See Joseph save starving African countries. One hundred and ten? Listen to Joseph’s dying words that bring hope to distressed spirits to this day. You will be surprised to discover how relevant Joseph’s life is to the nitty-gritty of yours. You can learn and be inspired to go on for God just as Joseph did. RUTH This love story begins with tragedy, but then out of the womb of all tragedy there comes something beautiful, which, if the tragedy had never occurred, would never have been seen. Yet it is more than a love story between a desperately poor girl and a very wealthy landowner. It is a story of love for God, of love for His people and all that they believe. Facing loneliness, poverty, and alienation from the culture in which she was living, Ruth allowed God to have His way with her life. She accepted the rough with the smooth as the matchless Divine Potter slowly molded her into the person He wanted her to be.

The story of Joseph is one of the most well known in the Bible, yet is rarely mentioned in Scripture outside the Book of Genesis. How then do we understand Joseph's significance in redemptive history? Is Joseph, as has often been suggested, a type of the Messiah? From Prisoner to Prince offers a comprehensive commentary on the Joseph narrative, exploring both its function within the overall narrative of Genesis as well as how it is used by later Biblical authors. Samuel Emadi considers the literary and theological context in which Joseph's story was first written, as well the intra-canonical development of the story via inner-biblical allusion and how it is referenced and alluded to within the New Testament. Thorough, cogent and detailed, Emadi's study contains the methodological rigour that has often been missing from messianic interpretations of Joseph. Carefully unpacking Joseph's role throughout the Bible, he demonstrates that this story is both the resolution to Genesis's narrative and typologically influences the later narration of redemptive history. The culmination is the New Testament's portrayal of Jesus as an antitypical, new and final Joseph. Insightful and accessible, From Prisoner to Prince is a valuable new addition to the New Studies in Biblical Theology series. Full of stimulating insight, it is ideal for students studying the Joseph story, pastors preaching from Genesis and anyone looking for commentaries on Joseph that dig deeply into its theology. From Prisoner to Prince will leave you with a greater understanding of the story of Joseph both as part of the Book of Genesis, and as part of the whole of Scripture that points ultimately towards Jesus Christ.

God's providence is a key concept biblically, yet increasingly Christians do not comprehend this doctrine. Many in the church today are practical deists; they believe in God the creator, but consider him distant and largely uninvolved in the day to day events of their own lives. The life narrative of Joseph as found in the book of Genesis shows us clearly that God is involved in every event of our lives, just as he was in the life of Joseph. This involvement in Joseph's life and in our own is through God's providence. The Anglican theologian, J. I. Packer, tell us that "providence is a continual exercise of that same energy [the universe creating energy] where by the Creator...involves Himself in all events and directs all things to their appointed end. ...Christians are never in the grip of blind forces; all that happens to them is divinely planned." What this means is that God was involved and in control not only of Joseph's rise to power in Egypt but also in the hard events of betrayal, slavery, false accusation and abandonment. These terrible events took Joseph by surprise but not his God. God's providence brought suffering into the life of Joseph, but that suffering had a purpose. The results of the bitter drink of suffering ultimately saved many, including the young Hebrew nation. Joseph's life shines a spotlight on the truth that God utilizes our afflictions to work his purposes in our lives and in the lives of others. We need this perspective that Joseph developed about his life. Joseph saw the hand of God, and because he did, he responded to his brother's betrayal with forgiveness and grace, not vengeance. Forgiveness and grace is the way of the cross; it is the path we are called to walk as Christians.
