George Floyd's death at the hands of a police officer on 25 May 2020 marked a turning point in the Black Lives Matter movement. Emerging in 2013, this black community rights movement gained national and international recognition and support to the point of leading demonstrations at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.0During those weeks, the visual artist and social activist Jonathan Moller walked the streets of Denver, Boston, Washington and New York following the trail of protests and took hundreds of photographs of the posters, graffiti, banners and murals left behind. The selected photographs and accompanying texts attest to their depth, ensure the permanence of their messages and invite the reader to reflect on their personal contribution to systemic racism that has existed for centuries around the world.

Graffiti, placards and protest ephemera from 2020's Black Lives Matter protests Award-winning Denver-based photographer and human rights activist Jonathan Moller (born 1963) turns away from his usual social documentary work in Central America with a new collection of images recording the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. In lieu of portraits or scenes from protests, Moller documents the past year of the movement through photographs of related graffiti and street art across Denver, Boston, New York and Washington, DC. These murals, placards and all forms of expression left for the public to read are intended to exist past the important messages presented by large vocal demonstrations. They quietly linger on, hopefully for the long run. Moller's photographs, like the street art, will continue delivering reminders to us all. The selection of COVID-19 response images included at the end of the book acts to contextualize the main body of work in the spirit of the times.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling series comes the latest title in the Who HQ Now format for trending topics. It tells the history of a political and social movement that advocates for non-violent civil disobedience and protests against incidents of police brutality--and all racially motivated violence--against Black people. When a Black teenager named Trayvon Martin was senselessly killed in 2012, the African American community called for his murderer to be held accountable. But like many other racially sparked incidents in the past, his killer walked free. People looked for justice and healing in the moment. They turned to social media and a simple yet powerful hashtag emerged, #BlackLivesMatter. The message grew into an international movement and has now become the rallying cry during protests against police brutality and racial acts of violence. The movement gained even more attention and support in 2020 when it called for police reform in the United States after the police-related murder of George Floyd.

Contemporary policing reflects the turn from welfare to domestic warfare as the chief means of regulating the excluded and oppressed The historic uprising in the wake of the murder of George Floyd transformed the way we think about race and policing. Why did it achieve so little in the way of substantive reforms? After Black Lives Matter argues that the failure to leave an institutional residue was not simply due to the mercurial and reactive character of the protests. Rather, the core of the movement itself failed to locate the central racial injustice that underpins the crisis of policing: socio-economic inequality. For Johnson, the anti-capitalist and downwardly redistributive politics expressed by different Black Lives Matter elements has too often been drowned out in the flood of black wealth creation, fetishism of Jim Crow black entrepreneurship, corporate diversity initiatives, and a quixotic reparations demand. None of these political tendencies addresses the fundamental problem underlying mass incarceration. That is the turn from welfare to domestic warfare as the chief means of regulating the excluded and oppressed. Johnson sees the way forward in building popular democratic power to advance public works and public goods. Rather than abolishing police, After Black Lives Matter argues for abolishing the conditions of alienation and exploitation contemporary policing exists to manage.

Each day that is blessed to us, some black man, woman or child has been killed or mistreated by police or from another black person. Black people in America should have always organized against injustices from police and other misguided blacks who are a threat to their survival. I cannot understand that after hundreds of years and comprehensive progress in civil and human rights, that black people's lives are still not valued or respected. Black Lives Matter is a book that expounds on the realities and hardships of black people living in America. The clouds of hate and distrust must end. So black people can avoid the senseless violence and disrespect they endure from other black people, police and government. If BLACK LIVES TRULY MATTER, then swift justice must be enforced for those that violated the freedoms and peace of blacks trying to live in America.
