Excerpt from John Wesley and the Methodist Societies IN my book on john Wesley and the Religious Societies I have traced Wesley's course until that Christmas Eve, in 1739, when he met a small company of earnest people whose supreme desire was to know how they might be saved from their sins.' I have been so much encouraged by the reception accorded to my book that I have been made bold to attempt a still more formidable task. I hope to be able to describe the work of Wesley down to the time of his death. In this volume I watch him as he lays the foundations of the Methodist Church. They were so carefully and securely laid that, up to the present time, they have determined the character of the building erected on them. Excerpt from John Wesley and the Religious Societies In writing this book, I have kept the Methodist Church in view. My eyes have been fixed on John Wesley and the England in which his greatest work was done. We can never understand the revival of religion which glorified the eighteenth century until we see Wesley as he was, and get rid of the false impressions created by writers who have had an imperfect acquaintance with him and his evangelistic work. It is impossible for me, in this place, to express my obliga tions to all those who have helped me to write this book. I am deeply in their debt. While acknowledging my indebted ness to those who have preceded me in the study of Methodist history, I must make special reference to the editor and the annotators of the Standard Edition of The journal of john Wesley. That book has been my constant guide. I am also indebted to my fellow-workers of the Wesley Historical Society for the kindly light they have shed on many difficulties. The Publications and the Proceedings of the Society have been invaluable. To Mr. Arthur Wallington, who has read the proofs, and to the Rev. John Elsworth, who has compiled the Index, my special thanks are due. J. S. S. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Life of the Rev. John Wesley, A. M., Sometime Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, and Founder of the Methodist Societies Vsruons Lives or Memoirs of the Founder of Me thodism have already been laid before the public. But it has been frequently remarked that such of these as contain the most approved accounts of Mr. Wesley, have been carried out to a length which obstructs their circulation, by the intermixture of details com paratively uninteresting beyond the immediate circle of Wesleyan Methodism. The present Life, therefore, without any design to supersede larger publications, has been prepared with more special reference to go neral readers. But, as it is contracted within moderate limits chie y by the exclusion of extraneous matter, it will, it is hoped, be found suficiently comprehensive to give the reader an adequate view of the life, labours and opinions of the eminent individual who is its sub ject; and to afford the means of correcting the most material errors and misrepresentations which have had currency respecting him. On several points the Author has had the advantage of consulting unpub lished papers, not known to preceding biographers, and which have enabled him to place some particulars in a more satisfactory light. London, May 10, 1831. Advertisement To This Edition. In this edition, translations are given of such passages in the dead languages as are left untranslated in the London edition. It is enlarged, too, and we hope enriched, by a variety of notes, on points of peculiar importance in an American edition. The price, nevertheless, is so extremely low as to be justified solely by the confident anticipation of very extensive sales. The profits, if any, (as of all other publications from the Methodist Episcopal Press, ) will be scrupulously applied to the spread of the Gospel, and to strictly charitable objects. Excerpt from Wesley and Methodism What has been attempted in the present work? Certainly, not a full and particular biography of John Wesley. He, it is true, is the central figure, and it is hoped that sufficient heed has been given to his personal actions and qualities to ensure a distinct, a recognisable, and - ii only it might be vivid portrait of that king of men. But a full and particular biography would call for more pages than go to compose the entire work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
