The life & works of the 20th century playwright. Bibliography of his works, translations & unpublished manuscripts. " The book is an excellent corrective of all the personal stories & memoirs, autobiographies & impressions of those who themselves were actors in the tale. Here we get perspective into the story & justice. His book will be the starting place for all who write hereafter of Synge & desire a solid base on which to build their conception. But the book is more than that. It is itself full of good criticism & alive with understanding."--SATURDAY REVIEW. Illus.

Excerpt from John Millington Synge and the Irish Theatre I beg to thank the many kinsmen and friends of the late John M. Synge who have kindly helped me in this attempt at a systematic study of his life and writings in their relation to the Irish Theatre at large. With no sinister pirati cal intention, I have freely tapped all available sources, and placed on record such facts as can be verified, such views as may safely be endorsed. I have thus been enabled to offer a biographical and sociological, rather than a purely literary, interpretation of Synge' s life - work. Some of my specific Obligations are mentioned in the text or in the footnotes; but, as individual recognition would be somewhat lengthy, and m certain cases against the wishes of my informants, a collective acknowledgment of my indebtedness must here suffice. Moreover, a prefatory display of famous names might possibly raise expectations which I. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book is a complete re-assessment of the works of J.M. Synge, one of Ireland's major playwrights. The book offers the first complete consideration of all of Synge's major plays and prose works in nearly 30 years, drawing on extensive archival research to offer innovative new readings. Much work has been done in recent years to uncover Synge's modernity and to emphasise his political consciousness. This book builds on this re-assessment, undertaking a full systematic exploration of Synge's published and unpublished works. Tracing his journey from an early Romanticism through to the more combative modernism of his later work, the book's innovative methodology treats text as process, and considers Synge's reading materials, his drafts, letters, diaries, and journalism, turning up exciting and unexpected revelations. Thus, Synge's engagement with occultism, pantheism, socialism, Darwinism, and even a late reaction against eugenic nationalisms, are all brought into the critical discussion. Breaking new ground in ascertaining the tenets of Synge's spirituality, and his aesthetic and political idealization of harmony with nature, the book also builds on new work in modernist studies, arguing that Synge can be understood as a leftist modernist, exhibiting many of the key concerns of early modernism, but routing them through a socialist politics. Thus, this book is valuable not only to considerations of Synge and the Irish Revival, but also to modernist studies more broadly.
