Excerpt from John Knox: The Reformer "Above all things, preserve the kirk from the universities." "If princes exceed their bounds, no doubt they may be resisted even by power." "God subjects people under princes, and causes obedience to be given under them." "God forbid that I ever take upon me to set subjects at liberty to do whatever pleases them." "I have learned plainly and boldly to call wickedness by its own name - a fig a fig, and a spade a spade." "Man always thinks he can derive a more perfect honoring of God than that which He Himself hath commanded." "There has been and shall be, even to the coming of the Lord Jesus, a Church which is holy and universal; to wit, The Communion of Saints." "What I have been to my country, albeit this unthankful age will not know, yet the ages to come will be compelled to bear witness to the truth." "I see the steeple of that place where God first in public opened my mouth to His glory, and I am fully persuaded that I shall not depart this life till that my tongue shall glorify His name in the same place." Excerpt from John Knox It may be well thus to represent to ourselves what must have been the outlook into the Western Church Of Major, or of any one who looked through Major's eyes, in that year 1523. But I think it very unlikely that Knox could have derived from such an outlook, or from Major in any aspect, a serious impulse to his career as Reformer. Knox no doubt learned from him scholastic logic, and turned it in later days with much vigour to his own purposes. Major, too, may have unconsciously revealed to his pupils with how much hope the former generation had looked forward to a council. We find afterwards that Knox and his friends, like Luther in his earlier stages, when appealing against the hierarchy, sometimes appealed to a General Council. But neither side re garded this as serious. It would have been more im portant if we could have shown that Major transmitted to his pupil the opposition maintained for centuries by his university to an ultramontane Pontifi' as the hereditary opponent Of all Church freedom and all Church reform. But Luther and the German Reformers had already exaggerated this view, so far as to suggest that the usurping Chief Of the Church must be the scriptural Antichrist. And their views, brought direct to Scot land by men like Hamilton, had, as we have seen, immensely increased the reaction in the mind of Major, which was begun abroad before 1518. It is, indeed. Excerpt from John Knox: His Ideas and Ideals Ample acknowledgments are due not only to the standard work of Dr. M'crie and the solid volumes of Dr. Hume Brown, but also to the slighter sketches by Mrs. M'cunn, Mr. Taylor Innes, and the late Dr. W. M. Taylor of New York, each of which has its own special charm. Upon john Knox's House and the translation into modern English Of T he Hz'sz'ory of Ike Reformation much affectionate and successful labour has been bestowed by Mr. Charles J. Guthrie. The lecture in Carlyle's Heroes, though brief, was epoch-making; there is a fine touch in the late R. W. Barbour's chapter in The Evangelical Succession and R. L. Stevenson's essays in Men and Books is fresh and suggestive. But it is to Dr. David Laing's six volumes of Knox's Works that the reader must turn who desires to see Knox face to face; and it is to this conscientious editor's immortal labours that I have to express the deepest debt of gratitude.
